  • Barricades not working

I built some barricades along my border knowing the Mongols would eventually try to invade from the north.

But the barricades didn't seem to work. They just invaded and moved right across barricaded squares as if the barricades were'nt there.

This seems to be a problem to me.

I can't remember if barricades are upgrades to forts or whatever, but you need to put units on those squares, too .

An unoccupied barricade will only force them to end their movement at that tile. It won't stop them.

i'm having the same problem. A Enemy cavalry just went by my occupied barricade without problems. It went from square 1, to square 4, then to square 8 (look at numpad). And yes, i was at war with that country and the barricade was in my territory.

As far as I know, enemy forces can pass by barricades without a movement hit. The movement hit occurs when the enemy force enters into a square with your barricade - then it will be forced to end its turn.

but that would give them a 100+ defense bonus .... why would i voluntarily give them that in my territory?

You just did. Not sure what you were expecting but its all part of the learning process.

I have no idea, I never built fortress or barricades. If I need them, I have done something wrong.

I think it's pretty well accepted that the advertised "feature" of barricades having a "zone of control" is actually meaningless, since as pointed out here and many times previously, units can easily pass by a barricade, although they do risk getting shot at by units inside. And having units stop if they go into your unoccupied barricade is a pretty pointless exercise if they decide to stay there with 100% defence bonus!

Barricades and fortresses have some perpose, sometimes to defend choke points when the ai has about 900 units . But more often I build them because my workers have already done every other possible action.

Barricades are good for chokepoints and what I call "killing corridors". Just set up a line of barricades that go a few squares deep into your territory such that the AI must pass by 2 or 3 barricades to get to its intended target. Leave an empty city at the end of the line just out of movement range to be that target. The AI will beeline for the city, ignoring your units in the barricades. When the inevitable SOD comes roaring in, most of the units will end up damaged. The beauty of ZOC is that a single unit can damage multiple AI units in a single turn. This is so powerful that it's almost an exploit IMHO.

well i suppose one use would be along the borders that prevent a 4 move army or even 3 move cavs from attacking the very first turn. Place 2 in a row and perhaps you can slow them down 2 turns. Though i don't like the 100+ defense bonus. they should of made that seperate.

Anyway, Once a enemy unit occupies a Barricade, do the subsequent units that enter that barricade still suffer the movement penalty?

Single Barricades are only useful at a chokepoint. For Barricades to be useful you need to build them as a system of fortifications. This requires a lot of worker turns and quite a few garrison units, but when used correctly they provide a huge deterent to the AI.

Barricades DO NOT prevent movement into your country, but what they do is prevent a second movement by fast movers if they are in a Barricade ZOC. By building a system of barricades you can make an invasion move one square at a time. This allows you to set up kill zones with artillery units and your own fast movers.

A typical barricade system is set up in checkerboard style and should be extended at least two tiles in depth along the length of the border. Also barricades do not affect movement outside of your cultural borders so any sharp corners should be protected by a barricade.

I like to use the "Maginot Line" defense any time I have a static border that I do not intend to expand. Basically, I build a fortress/barricade checkerboard two rows deep, and staff each one with an artillery and a defensive unit. Whenever enemy units try to pass through, I wake up the artillery within firing range, and use it to soften them up. This usually knocks them down to one HP, making them easy kills for my Cavalry/Tanks (or even by the Riflemen/Infantry defending the barricades in a pinch). If I leave a couple of Workers out in the open as bait, the AI doesn't even bother trying to take down the defenders in the Fortresses, instead waltzing right through my trap. ^_^

Barricades are occasionally useful tools for defense and for leading AI units into a killing zone, as has been mentioned above. But the most important thing, Pizza, is that it is a barricaded fort , and an empty fort is only useful to the attacker.
