  • What is seed?

the number you can enter when creating a new world. I don't know how long I've been playing and haven't noticed that. It may have came with conquests.

    how does it work?

I've also noted you can start a new game with one human player and no ai players. doesn't make for an interestin game

"random seed" is a number entered in a random number generator, which is used to create maps in civ(among other things). ussualy a computer counts seconds since midnight to find a seed, making it actually random. but if you enter a seed then it will use that one. entering the same seed will give you the same result.

      I entered 10. I was playing a tiny map.

It seemed to be a good number. I think I had 2 iron sources. I originally had 2 saltpeter, but the aztecs and incas borders took mine.

I then took over an Inca city and destroyed it so I could get my saltpeter back.

So 10 might be slightly high, but there were still civs's without iron. I just happened to do a huge land grap at the beginning of the game.

10? you can enter any number. something like 30000 would work. but i think you will only get the same map if ALL other settings are the same.
notice when you click "play last world" a seed is already entered.

That would imply that ie. 10 and 24x60x60+10 will give the same map............ anybody tried that out already?

@Cybershy: It doesn't. Probably it doens't use seconds, or it simply fails to apply modulo 86400.

              Pherhaps it's 86399 instead of 86400.....!??

Doesn't this work with words too?

I guess it just takes the ASCII code volue of it, still easier to remember.

It's common to take the seed for simple random number generators from the return value of the time() function. It returns the total number of seconds elapsed since Januar 1, 1970, midnight GMT and is thus, an unique number every new second, which doesn't repeat. The range of numbers used (signed 32 bit) runs out in 2038, but by this time they'll simply enlarge the numbers to 64 bit, which will serve well for the next couple billion years.

Try this with raging barbarians, changed from warriors/horsemen to infantry/tanks. After you're done, tell me again, that it wasn't interesting. By the way, wouldn't the game instantly claim a conquest victory?

yes the victory screen came right up. Well I'm not sure if it said victory. I just asked if I want to continue playing- yes or no. I didn't go to the post victory screens (replay etc.)
