    Ooooh, oooooh, that reminds me...

PTW Multiplay was an absolute disaster out of the box too

Really? I didn't care so much for the artwork or whatever, I wanted it for the player-written (much by Chieftess of CFC, IIRC) strat guides.

Will have to go look if I can draw myself off Poly.

Back to the ROOTS of addiction. My first missed poll!

As for Civ3 special, gold, goty and whatever... erm... pass me a beer
You all knew (or ought to have known) when each version/expansion/whatever came out that there would be a cheaper version along later. I buy books by my favourite authors in hardback because I don't want to wait for the cheaper paperback - same content, but I want to read it NOW. Who's being ripped off? Not me.

As for CIv3 Special, well if you want Special you pay for special. The game is no different. You don't want it, guess what buy the vanilla edition and feel virtuous.

SMAC is available on budget now for something like $5. but who could wait 5 years for that. Look at it like this, no one makes you pay, but if you want to play now, you pay the price. Immediate gratification costs, gratification deferred pays.

I bought CIv3 twice (once in Germany and once in England) - I don't regret it, even though the game was not what I expected, because I made the choice. I got lucky with PTW because I don't play multiplayer, so I got PTW for free when Conquest came out. I paid maybe £60/$80 for what I have. Hey Firaxis, forget Pirates come on and use that money to develop a decent Civ4!

the gamestop link has no data and its listed for $ 30

its a safe bet that it's just all the civs rolled into one + patches.. so maybe C3C is going to get another patch before 10/05/04

So CIV III 'complete' sells for $29.99 and Conquests sells for $29.99. Yet the 'Gold' edition sells for $39.99?

at amazon, they recommended you buy Civ3:Conquests together with Civ3:PTW
they call it "Perfect Partner": http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...608678-0254254

too bad for people who don't know that PTW is included in C3C
