And I say they should not be upgradeable, since that is not the point of these special units.
I will have to respectfully disagree with you on the issue. You already have the free units, once produced they aren't free. The question is what to do with them once they become obsolete.

But you knew before making the wonder to get them that this would be so. A player makes the decision to obtain these wonders or not (if they have the chance)-that you will need to pay upgrade for them is one of the consequences of your actions and one players should keep in mind. It is not up to the game to make it so players suffer the least possible consequences for your actions.

Best thing to do, use them while you got them-and if they are obselete, disband them for the shields.

Well, historically speaking you should be able to upgrade those units to riflemen when that tech comes, as opposed to waiting all the time for guerillas, since after riflemen medieval inf. is utterly outclassed.

But again, the player decided to get the wonder that brings forth these units. One has to deal with the consequences of it.

Another consideration is this: Would being able to upgrade these units help the player or the AI? It would help the player MUCH more than the AI. Isn't the AI already easy enough to beat?

Not opposed to this, but as I have pointed out this option is typically more beneficial to disband the units than to upgrade them.

I think that AI benefits equaly from upgrade,

Otherwise AI would just waste shields for upkeep or practicly obsolete unit or use them for suicide attacks. None which is good option.

The AI already does this with regular units. It is unlikely that any civ will get more than say 20 such units, and I would be shocked if an AI player had many left by the time they were trully useless.
