Often, but for the past few months it has been mostly Sid. And yes, you do not get to be first to a lot of techs.
I am happy to be first to Phil and my freebie. 1.22 has even made that harder.
The good news is the wars can be a riot, if you like seeing several stacks with over 100 units in them coming your way. MGL's are as cheap as dirt though.

How?? The only way I can think of is if you get Philosophy first, and then get another tech for free first, and get a scientific leader for them both. Now that would be pretty nice.
It has been reported and a save posted for just such an occurrence. Now that would put a smile on your face and maybe even make you burst out laughing.
I got 2 SGLs on the same turn once by popping a hut and getting philosophy. ToE hasn't paid off that way for me yet but should get reported eventually by someone.

For better barbarians, add NoAIPatrol=0 to conquests.ini (see this thread )
I've found myself in two types of games... the most common one where I get no scientific leaders whatsoever.
And one where they just keep piling up. And strangely, its when I play as a non-scientific civ. I've never had any playing as any scientific civ despite the marginally higher chances.
The most I ever got in one game was eight. Though I don't really see that ever happening again.

I found myself with a few spare hours yesterday (there haven't been many recently), and I fired up a new game as the Hittites. I've been messing around with them for a while. I figure they give me a pretty good shot at the luckiest start ever: free settler from hut + early SGL (for the Pyramids). Russia might be the best chance for that, but the Hittites are in there. Anyway...
When I saved and quit last night, I titled the save "Luckiest Game Ever Played."
Why?
Settler from hut? Check.
Early SGL? Check... check... check... check!
FOUR Ancient Age SGLs, folks. I used them on the Pyramids, the Great Library, the Forbidden Palace, and the fourth is eagerly awaiting the discovery of Invention.
The funny thing is, in terms of dominance, I've had stronger games. The terrain is very jungly/marshy, and it took me forever to hook up my luxuries. My strongest neighbor is unfortanately the Celts, and they have Zeus (but I haven't seen any GSs, so they might not have iron). All I need now is a MGL for a 3-man chariot army Gotta use that SGL I'm holding, but it's worth it for insta-Leos.
Four SGLs in one game is pretty awesome. Four SGLs in the ancient age is just ridiculous. I'm now due for a run of truely hideous luck.

In a display of AI stupidity, the Celts DID have iron, or rather access to it, but because it was 1 tile outside their cultural borders (un-expanded), it went unused. No colony in this case. I wonder why. So no GS's & no GA for my powerful neighbor. No more AC's, either, since the fall of Entremont. Got the MGL for the 3x 3MC army, but I got it killed taking Entremont - stupidity on my part there, pushing for the third attack when the army had lost 1/2 its hit points in the first 2. No matter, got another and now have a 3 knight army rampaging around.
I have had a maximum of 7 SGLs in one game, using a scientific civ. In the early ages they can be a decissive factor.
I have never, ever managed to get a MGL, though, even in the games where I fought a lot. I guess I'll have to concentrate on that next time.

Just in case you didn't know this already: if you have a SGL lying around unused, you *cannot* generate a MGL. You *can* get another SGL, though. Odd, but true.
