What would be optimal for running a 362x362 32 civ game? A 5GHz CPU with 1GB RAM?

Don't worry about zclient, it is not taking cycles to any extent. Even when you are connected to the net.

I play on XP with it all the time. I normally do not have a lot of other things going, but if you look at the monitor things like excel/notepad and such are not doing anything while you are playing.

It is as Sir Ralph said, as long as you have at least as much as the app uses, more will do little. The bottleneck is the CPU, except when saving or loading the game.

Once you have enough memory for the max that the process will use it really can't use more memory.

Actually, if you do have enough RAM set your virtual memory to zero, windows is kinda lazy and likes to use your hard-drive even if it doesn't have to.

To put things into perspective and into more human terms.

If it takes your comp 3 minutes to get data from your (physical) memory, then it would take 4 MONTHS to retrieve it from your hard-drive(virtual memory)

Ohh and Diss, about the colour thing, a good idea when using that many civ's is to use the 'colour blind(?)' option. it will put the name of the civ on screen.
