Another newbie question

I'm playing the shogun campaign. How do one upgrade units, I especially like to upgrade my shogun but it says I have no shogun-1 to upgrade, despite being in a town where there are baracks and I have researched the right techs. (I press shift-U since I see no upgrade button).
Anyone knows what's the problem? I have about 140 gold.... Does it cost more to upgrade?

If you see no upgrade button, there's likely something preventing you. You're sure 140 is enough gold? Look at the costs of the Shogun-1 and the Shogun-2 (or whatever the units you want to upgrade from and to are called). Subtract the cost of the unit you're upgrading from from the unit you're upgrading to, and multiply that by 3. That's the amount of gold it will cost.

Also, are there any resources required to build the Shogun-2 that you don't have hooked up? (I don't recall if there are any that are needed...)

Thanks, seems it was a money issue. Strangely enough it costed 177 gold to upgrade.
