In all of the Civ3 games I have played, I have found the Celts to develop into killer AI's (KAI's) more often than any other. That's why, if I can, I kill the Celts off as quickly as possible. Does the AI handle the Ag and Rel traits especially well?

I'll say this much, regardless of the stellar UU and the preferred method of gaining it, the Agricultural Celts combined with CxxC city spacing are uberpowerful. Playing on a huge map with 8 civs (continents, Monarch), this is the first time I've ever been able to keep the other continent AI's from plunking down settlements on the coasts of my continent, and I only had to off one settler team (whose owner is now polite to me ) to do it.

I also noticed that I was able to come off 50 turn research and still turn a profit much earlier in the ancient era than usual. Because of an extended stay in Monarchy while all but clearing my continent of Egyptians and Arabs, it took a little longer to get tech parity, then pull ahead. I've got to think had I been able to get to and stay in Republic as quickly as I normally do, I'd have had the tech lead much earlier. But then I'd have also had Arabia and Egypt still to contend with.

Whether or not most of this effect was the city spacing, the Ag trait helped greatly in achieving that spacing and a rapid expansion rate.

Just an illustrative sidenote: I started between Arabia and Egypt, and expanded so quickly that they never met each other through exploration, despite sharing a landmass. I think I finally sold contact to one of them after I had known the other continent for quite a while. I'm thinking the Celts may be an ideal civ for the Arrian Deception.

(that'll probably seem like a misquote, but i dont care)

so all of the religious civs will be daunting foes. you get two of six (or eight) special traits, and a not-so-great unique unit.

in my current game i'm bordering the aztecs and indians, and they're both doing the same thing, and i dont fear one over the other. one is green and one is grey, thats what they mean to me. if youre happy with the amount of variation between the civs, that i'm honestly happy for you.
The problem that I think you're having to deal with is the fact that the AI isn't perfect and that the AI doesn't know how to use its traits. It has a single scheme to follow and some traits help it inadvertantly.

If you played more humans, trust me, you would quickly learn to respect and be able to precisely determine the differences between all of the traits and especially the UUs. In an environment where humans are involved things must be done correctly or you die, and every player is squeezing every advantage out of his civ. That is when you see the uniqueness in each civ come into play.

Anyone who has played MP against the Zulus or Celts knows damn well that there are significant differences between the civs.

Conqueror (Persia), jshelr (Mongols) and I (Greece) are currently in an alliance against alexman (celts). And atm he is winning. He has (to my knowlegde) at least 8 GS, ivory, and started next to a river. With flood plains. And two wheat.

I'll tell you of the outcome when the war is finished

Persia started the war with a decent stack immortals. After razing a couple of cities and upgraded GS plus timed prebuilds, no more immortals, I lost 60% of my hoplites and 66% of my archers. jshelrs' stack is in tatters as well.

...And every player is squeezing every advantage out of his civ.

Maybe I should change that avatar to a green frog now, or even a leprechaun...

Unfortunately, even an amazing starting location with a great civ like the Celts is not going to be enough to overcome a 2-front 1-vs-3 situation. Of course if I didn't have the Celts, the game would have been over for me by now.
