At least to me, it is. 
Situation: Scandinavia, Huge, Continents, Monarch, 4 rival civs left. I'm at war with Egypt, with the goal of total conquest, since they're my only continental neighbor (aside from one size 1 Persian town and the foothold the Iroquois just got that you see in the shot). The water to the north of the strait is a continental sea, as you can see from the mini-map. My main attack force is pushing southward, but my Marine armies have been eating up coastal cities left and right. I've had two transports parked at New The Hague ever since I took it from the now-extinct Dutch, long enough for me to have forgotten they were there.
Screenshot: New Elephantine, on the eastern side of the narrow strait, is across an extremely large mountain range. I can't even imagine trying to cross it with ground troops. I'm highly averse also to landing a column on enemy shores to be whittled away before even having a chance to attack. The AI is obviously aware of its natural defenses because it's only left two spearmen to guard it. With Marines, though, what could have been a painful march becomes an afterthought hit on a soft target. I now have total control of access to the sea, have avoided the agony of a slow march across the mountains and have another front open should I decide (unlikely) to attempt that march in reverse, and all accomplished with no casualties.
