  • Ever had one of those "I'm a better player than that" moments?

Boneheaded rookie mistake here, but as I'm gearing up for my big war, with visions of Berserks running rampant, Leo's just completed, three galleys loaded with Berserks headed for the enemy capital on the other side of his empire, almost perfectly timed, I might add, about a dozen knights waiting on his borders with some other assorted units, and an entire battle plan laid out, I'm feeling good. Of course, as soon as my galleys reach the capital, the turn after I had to declare war, I slap my forehead.

If this is Amsterdam, those must be Swiss Mercs. Ugh, I forgot all about those bastages.

Naturally, he's got about six of them fortified in Amsterdam, so after killing four of them, I had to limp away from my objective. A crushing blow and "brilliant" master plan turns into a whittling away war. Oh, well, at least I got some saltpeter out of it, plus a leader-rushed FP well away from my capital, well-timed GA and a few more towns to support my forces, so it turned out pretty well. I don't know when I'll quit kicking myself for forgetting the enemy's UU right at the time it's in its heyday, though.

Just my luck, finally play with the Vikes and wind up next to the Dutch and French. Oh, they'll still go down, just a little slower than some other neighbors might have.

Heh, noting compared to me. The worst mistake I've made managed to turn the game around - when I was winning. You see, I had built the UN (why not?); but, for some reason I can't remember, I decided to call a vote. Immediately. I had done no work to grease the AIs up, nothing; I just called it on a whim. Guess how many votes I got?

I lost to the runner-up in pop, 1 to however many civs were left in the game

That'll teach me to think disdainfully of the "easy" UN victory...

Trying to launch an invasion with too few units sucks bigtime. I've done it a time or two, and it's not a very pleasant experience, let me tell you.

I have one of those every game . Sometimes I play so quickly I don't fully analyze the situation.

When you haven't got enough units you always pick that time to get RNG whupped as well.

My biggest one is not giving in to Persian extortion early in the game when they are close and have Iron. I seem to get wiped out early about half of the time if I've neglected my army. Once I built a ton of roads outside of my cultural boarders for easier expansion and they turned out to be used against me. Very quick game!

              Occasionally, I will make a two-fold mistake:

              (a) after the AIs have the ability to trade freely around the globe, I will assume because I don’t see a resource in its territory, it doesn’t have access to that resource which leads me to -

              (b) not check with my foreign advisor (or send an Explorer or worker running through its territory to check things out) to see what the latest unit the AI I am getting ready to attack has -

I attack and end up slogging through a war against better units than I thought I would face because it traded for what it needed.

              Pure stupidity.

Heh.....once when I was in late game democracy I had all four of my neighbors on the same pangea island declare war on me within two turns. I had a very significant technology lead, modern armors soon began pumping out of my cities and proceeded to beat the holy hell out of their cavalry.

But war weariness became and issue eventually so I figured I would switch to communism and take the war to them.

I had a revolution that lasted about four turns. During this time no production meant my armies were scraping for their lives against the 20+ cavalry that each civ seemed to be sending against me every turn.

Finally the revolution is over! And.....

I had skipped over Communism in research.

Mine was recent too. I completely forgot to end an alliance I had with the Byzantines when I made peace with the Germans. I ended up being a trade pariah throughout the rest of the game. Otherwise I could have easily coasted to a spaceship win. I've had to slog it out with artillery and infantry as my main troops since I can't get to tanks quickly enough, while my opponents have flight etc. Luckily...they didn't have rubber or I would have been in major trouble.

Oh yeah! I feel for you on that!!

I was the Chinese and I had an Alliance with the Carthaginians. Together, we trashed the Mayans. The former Mayan empire was a patchwork of Chinese and Carth cities scattered everywhere. My newly developed cities were growing and building slowly because of corruption so I was researching Communism.

Well, whatdya'know, the turn before I get Communism, the Carthaginians declare war on me. Fine! I was ready for that. Next turn, I get Communism and I did the stupidest thing. Yeah, I declared a Revolution to change governments.

It would be 7 turns before I could regain control of my empire. 7 turns before I could build any new units. So, for the next 7 turns, my vaunted Elite Chinese Riders were forced to fight a retreating sword and gun-battle with the Carths and their twenty-stacks of Knights, Medieval Infantry and Numidian Spearmen. Counter-attack and fall back to hills and mountains. Sacrificing territory to save units and gain time . . . time until my empire in turmoil could get its collective act together.

But I came back with a vengeance!!! Upgraded all my Riders to Cavalry, Catapults to Cannons and Musketeers to Riflemen. The reborn Chinese hordes descended from the mountains, stormed through the open plains and carved up the Carths like turkey dinner. I have to admit - even though it was a dumb mistake to begin with, revenge felt sooooo good!!!

Yeah that's more or less how mine ended I put myself back in democracy, won the space race about twelve turns later (which caught me off guard I had forgotten I was building that stuff) researched communism and then proceeded to raze every Japanese, Persian, Zulu, English, Sumerian and Portuguese city on the entire island I was so mad at them. It was fun, but I was a dumbass for trying to switch to government I didn't know.

Oh, what a pity. France doesn't have saltpeter. The Dutch would have had all three sources on my continent, but I took two of them.
