  • Can I make engineers?

I want (the extra movement point of) engineers back.
So I basicaly copied all settings from the worker to the Mao unit (because I don't really use that anyway and it looks most like an engineer). I made the worker upgradable to engineer/mao after the invention of Ironclads, I made the prerequisit of the engineer Ironclads and gave it two movement points.

But it didn't work. What did I do wrong?

Did you make the new Engineer unit 'available' to all civs, because the default setting will still only have that unit available to China. This is located center down on the unit editor page or tab.

I have done similar, works great, however you may want to up the 'worker' efficiency of the Engineer to 200 or 250. This makes it more viable, also with this for balance significally increase it's cost.

What do you mean it didn't work, what happens? There could be a number of things that you did wrong, you'll have to be more specific.

I made it available to all civs.

It didn't work means that when I discovered Ironclads the unit was not available nor could I upgrade my existing workers.

One reason why it didn't work which I can think of is that I had already started the game before I made the changes, but I thought that wouldn't make a difference.

The new engineer unit is twice as expensive as the worker unit.

In order to have the new changes go into effect, you have to start a new game with that mod. The save game only uses the rules available before any later modifications were made.

The "can't change rules on the fly" feature is very annoying to me, since it makes it difficult to fine-tune anything but the early game.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
