Trade route blockade

Is it possible to give ships of for that matter troops a bigger area of trade blockade? As it is now you need quite a lot of ships to block sea routes after astronomy(?) when you can traverse all water squares safely. If the ships also blocked the square next to them it'd be easier to blockade the opponent that you're at war with.

So, can this be done or am I the only one who think that it could be a good idea?

Basically a "zone of control" specific to blockading. Hmm...sounds reasonable to me, since it seems intuitive enough.

Exactly. (Why didn't I come up with the fine phrasing... ) As is now I never try to blockade since that'd mean spreading my ships to thin.
