Do I need the CD in to play vanilla Civ 3?

I'd like to be able to remove my CD drive from my laptop so I can insert another battery beacuse Civ 3 runs my main battery down in about 45 minutes. I know I need the CD in place to launch the game, but does it need to stay there as I play?

I don't think so unless you end the game. The retire screen graphics use the disc, I believe.
