Something happened to the map generator

I am finding more of my starts

- are near lakes instead of rivers

- are on grassland with only 2 - 3 shield squares in radius

- are near the Equator so I am surrounded by Jungles and Deserts

- and I cannot find luxuries within 15 squares of my start!!!


What is going on here??? Did someone at Firaxis say "y'know, we need to change the map generator to produce a lot more bad maps?"

No, I've been noticing it too. I'm getting alot more lousy starting positions than I did before. The other night I spent most of the evening just restarting the game trying to get a good opening. I finally gave up playing the game altogether.

I must have been getting your good starts then. I got a 3 cattle river in one recently. I also got a nice flood plain/desert start as the Incas.

About the only difference I've seen is that they had to put the Marshes somewhere.

I usually play my starts, even the mediocre ones (I lose a lot of games, oh well). The only one I rerolled recently was the marsh start I had.

But there definetely was a change in the Strategic Resource distribution. I've never seen Continent maps before where ALL Horses are on one continent, and several others have only 1 remote Iron, Saltpeter or Coal for 3 Civs. Looks like they're clustered more like Luxuries now, and the linking to the staring position was dropped.

In the case of Horses, historically accurcurate as well. (There were no horses in the Americas until the Spanish brought them over.)
