The armada acted more like a huge disorganized fleet than a "Navy". The only thing the ships did well together was sink and retreat (neither of which require great leadership).
What popped in my mind when I was thinking about "Air Forces" was the Battle of Britain (German "Air Forces" getting beat-up by individual British defenders).
