Well alot of SP players use them to accelerate there games. Therefore they do things that the editor isn't designed to do.

why would you need a trainer to play Civ?

Well if you take a look at the CFC Creation and Content area, I'm sure they can tell you all about what they use trainers for. Many use it to give themselfs gold or tech to move the game on...personnally I'm a classic, start from scratch civer but the current(SP only) trainers have a loyal following.
