  • We get Satellites!

    From Civ3.com
More Techs: Map the world using Satellites to explore the entire map.
Some of you have undoubtably noticed this before but C3C will include satellite operations. I was quite dissapointed this wasn't included in the original game.

If it's done the way (I think) I would like, there will be a small wonder, the "National Reconnaissance System" or something. This will unveil the entire map to the builder. You will also be able to see enemy unit positions. I would have a toggle feature where the player can elect to watch AI moves throughout the AI turn or not. Thus we don't have to watch AI units mindlessly roam about; but if you're at war watching the AI move will probably keep you better informed. I think submarines should remain invisible, or at most become visible only near the end of the tech tree.

This is good news. Hopefully there will be different editor options for it. Obviously, it will show all tiles and correctly show city sizes. Then there's the question of whether it can "investigate city," whether it sees regular units, and whether it sees invisible units.

Ooooo, do we get to do like Alpha Centauri and have defensive one to shoot down nukes?? (ala the 'Star Wars' program from the 80's)
But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

There is a small wonder that does that already.

I think they mean when you discover satellites you get the world map...

Or it's just a small wonder that works like Apollo used to in civ2, in that it reveals the world map...

SMD is so late in the tree that unless you decide specificly not to win by space race, it's not going to be built.

There better be more to this wonder than just revealing the world map. By the time you get satellites you've probably purchased a map of everything from the AI(s). ...Those AIs are so dillegent at uncovering each little tile.

Perhaps it will also give you constant info on other civs military units?

My post also carried the implication that you could use the SMD flag on the satellites in a modded game to make the satellites shoot down nukes.

                      from the chat:
what does the new satellite wonder reveal, the map or troop locations?
                      the map
Well that's disappointing, if not useless.

Yep, that's quite disappointing. They could have come with a better idea.

                            Hey whiners...

Now we can mod the game so tech XXX reveals the map.

It is a great mod functionality
