  • Please help to find a bug in the Crusaders scenario - the game crashes

    I've been playing a great medieval scenario The Crusades 1100AD and enjoyed it very much until i researched Organized Religion and then when it is the time to reasearch a new tech the game constantly crashes. I believe it's due to a bug in the tech tree but i can't figure it out. Can anybody take a look at the rules.txt section and see if there is a problem? I can't wait to continue playing it but i can't unless i set the reasearch to 0%. Please help!

    Welcome to Poly.

    Could you please provide some additional information?

    Exact name of scen
    Author
    Where downloaded
    What civ are you playing

    The problem may not be in the tech table. Anyway, I'd like to see the table in its original column (text) format which is much easier to check.

      Thank you Agricola
      The thing is i can't tell who the author of the scenario is since it won't let me to access the url i downloaded it from:

      Here is the the description .txt file:
      ^The Crusades
      It is 1100. Nearly five years on from Pope Urban's call at Clermont-Ferrand for Christian knights to retake the Holy Land from the infidel Turks, the First Crusade has been a resounding success. Crusaders from across Western Europe made their way through Anatolia and, despite defeats by the Seljuk Turks, reached the Levant and fought their way to Jerusalem, which was conquered in 1099. Their success also allowed the ailing Byzantine Empire to regain some of its lost territories in Asia Minor. However, although the Crusade's primary objectives were achieved, it failed to completely break the power of the surrounding Muslims. The Turks, recent invaders from Central Asia, remain in control of much of Anatolia, as well as Mesopotamia and Persia. Meanwhile, the Fatimid caliphs of Egypt exercise control over much of the Arab Muslim world. The Crusader states, meanwhile, are heavily dependent on reinforcements from their home countries, mainly France. Back in Western Europe, an uneasy peace has been maintained between the major powers: England, France and the German Empire. But endemic warfare is still a feature of the Iberian peninsula, where the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon are engaged in perpetual warfare with the Muslim powers in the south, known to posterity as the Reconquista. How long can the Europeans continue to put their differences aside? How long until the Muslims regain their strength? The coming centuries will witness a clash of civilisations on a scale barely seen before or since.
      @end -- this line must be here!

      Can you recognize who the author is?

      I'm playing Anglo-Normans
      I don't know how to paste the rules.txt file here the way it will show it in a nice table

            @EZRhino

            Thanks. However, I don't have it among the 200+ scens in my scen downloads folder, the SL site is down indefinitely and I've failed miserably in my attempts to locate it anywhere else on the web.

            Does anyone have a copy of the download zip? If so, please post or PM me a heads-up and I'll PM you my e-mail address.

                Got it.

                @McMonkey

                I believe you uploaded Jamestout's scens to SL. Can you get in touch with him?

                I've played his 100 Years War (overall a very good scen except that the war is actually only a 50 Years War if played by a devout pacifist ) and found some minor problems with resouce icons. There is a disconnect between resource types and their icons . . . . sheep look like beavers, cattle look like gemstones, etc..

                      Thank you guys!
                      Meanwhile the problem was fixed after i changed "no" to "nil" in the line of the Catholic Philosophy advance in the rules.txt:

                      Catholic Philosophy,6, 1, Fli, no, 1, 2 ; Phi

                      to:

                      Catholic Philosophy,6, 1, Fli, nil, 1, 2 ; Phi

                      What is the difference is between no and nil? Anyway it worked!
                      I'm able to play on. Huge thanks to Jamestout. The scenario gives a great feeling of the medieval times.

                        "No" means the tech essentially does not exist for game purposes. The tech can be given to a civ by the developer (possibly events, I'm not sure), and said civ will be allowed to build any units that tech enables (all else being equal). I believe it will also work for the purposes of governments, terrain improvements like railroads and fortresses, and other attached bonuses. However, you cannot build any building or wonder whose prereq has a "no" for one or both of its own prereqs, and the tech will NOT be researchable, tradeable, or stealable--nor will it appear in the Civilopedia.

                        Also, "no" techs tend to screw up the civilopedia listings for other techs in the embassy screen (you see the Greeks have Bronze Working, click on the tech to see the entry and it gives you Iron Working or something instead). The game probably crashed because you ran out of things to research, and Civ2 goes bonkers if nothing is available.

                        "Nil" just means that prereq slot is blank; a tech with two "nil" entries will be researchable by anyone from the start of the game on (unless you're playing Test of Time and the tech has been restricted). These same rules apply to units and buildings: "no" means it's removed from normal play, "nil" means it's free.

                        Wow, that was probably way more answer than you needed. Oh well, I typed it all so I might as well post it.
