  • I made a map!

Yeah how about that? I made a map.

A while back I found out a new way, for me, to make maps more easy. Nothing special about it, more that I've finally found out a way that works ok for me. Anyway, a while back I posted a thread that I started making of Azeroth and that's on hold. It won't be used by anyone. But I hope this map will, if not by others, by myself. It's of Beleriand. Yup, THE Beleriand, that lied west of the Middle-Earth we know from lord of the Rings, though thousands of years earlier.

Several users have expressed their interest in a new scenario covering the first Age. I've always liked "Fall of Beleriand" over "Dagor Bragollach" simply because it don't only cover the war itself, but also the quest of several of the heroes. A ToT update of that scenario would be awesome! Maybe that's what I'll do eventually. Inspired by Catfish War of the Ring scenario, I can use two maps, one covering caves (Menegroth, Nargothrond etc.) and impassable terrains.

Getting back to topic, the map is almost done. The basics of it was completed much faster than I had expected and now it only needs some final touches making it feel more alive and adjusting it to a future scenario.

Before I started making the map I knew of two maps of Beleriand, both from the two scenarios I referred to earlier. This is much larger though. I've based it mostly on the Beleriand map in "The Atlas of Tolkien's Middle Earth" book and then tweaked it some by checking additional maps.

The map for "Fall of Beleriand" is 60x165.
The map for "Dagor Bragollach" is 100x149.
Keep in min that both of those map has alot of see in the west to depict Eärendils voyage to the west.
My map is 133x210, not covering unnecessary water in the west.

I know that bigger doesn't mean better when it comes to Civ2, but I actually had a good time making the map just chilling and listening to music. My goal is to at least try and make a scenario. I've attached a preview of it. I hope it works.

Looks very nice. If you make a scenario, I want to help.

That's good to know. Have you played the Fall of Beleriand scenario?

I have it but haven't played it (yet). Looked into the events though and I agree with you - having the quests makes a much better scenario. A little daunting though.

Not that this is a bad thing in a Silmarilion scenario.

Yeah, maybe all of the quests can't be simulated. But you can still tell of those via events. I've already designed the map so that Tuors journey to Vinyamar and then to Gondolin can be done. The hardest part is getting the AI to work properly, as usual.

Yeah. Has Test of Time made the Go To command any better?

It wouldn't be too bad if Morgoth doesn't attack exactly as he does in the books, but making sure he does beat up on the Noldor and sons of Fearnor makes the difference between waiting for something to happen and wishing you were waiting for something to happen.

There has to be Beren & Luthien's quest.

Please don't use any kind of yellow sand for Anfauglith!
(I don't recall Tolkien specifying the color actually, but grey or black would be a lot cozier here.)

Don't worry, I'm not. It is described as a desert however. http://www.glyphweb.com/ARDA/a/anfauglith.html
And I can't find a decent terrain that's dark and still matches the rest :S
