sprite confusion

I'm having a problem with the use of the Static spr. I want to make a couple of units available to several civs in my latest scenario. To differentiate them, I want to use the sprite file with the mask, so that the same unit has it's own national colors on selected parts of the unit.

How do I create a new Static spr. file? I can't figure out Merc's instructions in the CivSprite readme. Can anyone give a ToT sprite creation guide for dummies? Curt, you made excellent use of the Static spr. and mask bmp. in your latest scenarios. Can you be of assistance? Or anyone else?

Drop CivSprite and use SpriteGen instead. Mercator added mask support for SpriteGen a couple of years ago. It's much simpler now. Rules settings can be found on my site.
