  • In need of a map maker

I'm working on a modpack, and for it I want to include a scenario in a specific historic region, namely the the British Isles. However, after a lot of searching I have not found a map that meets my requirements. So I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to make it for me.

The map needs to include all of Britain, Ireland, Scotland, and everything in between. It also must include the portion of France across The Chanel, so that Normandy may have a spot. It should also be possible to sail around Scotland. The year the scenario starts is 600 AD. Additionally, I am using modified terrain statistics, in which forests, jungle and swamp are the best sources of production (instead of hills and mountains), so I would prefer an overabundance of woodland to an under abundance. And at the time, I believe England was more wooded and swampland rich than it is today. Certainly, It's important that the map is not mostly just grasslands. I prefer a map that can fit lots of cities, but it should still feel like a normal map -- no need to make it as big as possible.

I'm attaching 4 maps to illustrate what I want. _britain.mp is exactly the area I want. Unfortunately the author did not put more than sparse terrain in; it's almost all grassland. UKEIRE.mp and UK.mp are both workable in terrain features, except they each lack a vital portion of land (Ireland and Normandy). CHARLES.MP has a great map, with a wonderfully high amount of forest, and is made for the time period, but it covers more than I need, and so makes England too small.

If you're interested in whether you will ever see the completed Mod-pack I can say this:
The modpack has significant progress, and is virtually done in terms of design and gameplay (Tech tree, units, improvements, ect.). However, the art, text, and sound still need a lot of work. Once I get a map, I will need to set all the players to the sufficient level of development. Once that is done, I am considering releasing a full featured beta. However, this is a spare time project, and has no time frame, so I can't say that anything will happen at all quickly.

One of the best maps I have seen of Britain and Normandy is the one Jamestout made for his Hundred Years' War scenario. It includes all the areas you mention, the terrain is varied and accurate and it is a good size. You can easily trim off the parts of France you don't require using the MapEdit tool.

I wasn't aware that MapEdit could do that. I'll try it.

I tried that map. It's mostly good. Though the biggest issue with it is it doesn't use plains. It also has it's own terrain types which don't quite match up with the normal ones, which causes some weirdness. And it uses oceans for rivers in some places, but that maybe be for the better.

But I'll be able to make something good of it.

Still looking for a map maker if anyone's willing though. I'm sure it would result in a better product.

Might also be an idea to create some single-square cities on the eastern edge of the map in which to base Vikings.

I might do that, but I doubt that the AI would be smart enough to sail across the sea. I'm not really planning to have a viking civ on the map, but I will add a starting location for them. Maybe I'll make it on a tile in the east, or on the north tip of France, or near York.
