  • State of the civ2 community?

Hi I just returned after being away for a long time from civ2...I can't bring myself to buy the new civ games after the taste civ3 left in my mouth but I find civ2 is still pretty fun. When I left, some people were doing some pretty amazing mod'ing that was really transforming the game (Red Front etc) and I was wondering if there is still much of a civ2 community around? I tried downloading some stuff from the apolyton downloads archive but it seems pretty abandoned. Many of the scenarios were not downloadabled and the archive would only load by alphabet and even then only 1 page. Are there still any sites you can get civ2 scenarios from? Are people even still making them?

People where still making Civ2 scenarios about a year ago when I last played it.

Civ2 is indeed a classic and is ireplacable. I suggest digging up the best of the old mods in the archives both here and at CFC (thought their Civ2 community went quiet waaaaay befor ours did)

But I would nevertheless recomend Civlization 4, everyone agrees that it is much better than Civ3. The rest are split between those who think its better than civ2 and those who think its equally fun but different (the 5% who think civ2 is better and have actually tried both are negligible)

Yep. People are still around and making scenarios. (Like me. )

Most of the new scenarios being made can be downloaded from the main Scenario League site.

So yes, while the Civ 2 community might be relatively small, it's still up and running!

As the guys said, the small community here is still producing content, and the game
is supported on the forums...So while those two remain constant, life does goes on!

The amount of people is smaller than in the glory days of the early 2000s, but the
hardliners are more specialised and the mods are better now than ever...Various
old-school scenario craftsmen are still around, along with superb recent creators.

Some good scenarios are being made by regulars like GhostOfDisco on this very thread!

I would recommend grabbing CIV2 MGE and ToT and enjoying the best mods
and scenarios that are around the net...Here are some great CIV2 links...

        For making your own mods...

There is also a small but very dedicated group of multiplayer (Play by e-mail) gamers here: http://www.civforum.de/forumdisplay.php?f=3

Although it is a German site there are a few English speakers like myself and the majority of the German speakers also speak English very well so communication is rarely an issue.

I think Apolyton is the last real bastion of serious Scenario creation, although you do see some activity at Civ Fanatics. As the guys said the community is pretty small now but most designers know their stuff inside out and stick around. CivII is one of those games that is so addictive it just refuses to die

I have been in love with (obsessed!) CivII for a good decade now. If I have not tired of it by now I guess I never will. I would still probably dabble if there was no community, just as an outlet for my creative impulses. The fact that other people can enjoy my efforts is just a huge bonus

Yeah I'm always itching for Civ2 scenarios... sadly I see so many incomplete works.

                  That 5% includes me .

civ4 seemed like a good game, and wonderfully modable with all those unit xml files, but it was massively memory-hungry; my vanilla game CTD'ed repeatedly after a couple of hours play. Now I have a machine with the memory to play it, I find it is not compatible with Vista. Laughable waste of money, basically

CIV4 was a good game - But for me no other game comes close to CIV2 for that classic feel of genius simplicity...

That is until a Freeciv version that has the same feel comes along...!
