Thanks for the information. I'm afraid there are very few active Civ II players left here.

What exactly is a Succesion game? I have had a look at the thread and I guess it is a PBEM using the original game, right?

I used to play Succession Games on this site constantly. Basically, it was a group of players (usually between 8 and 12) playing a game of Civ2 cooperatively. Each player would get a specified number of turns (usually 10, sometimes more in the early game), then pass the game to the next player in line.

After his turns, each player was required to post a turn log along with the .sav file in the thread, detailing what they had done. While the next person in line played his turns (usually a 2 or 3 day process), other members of the group would then post comments critiquing the previous player's performance -- a process we called RCC, for Rabid Constructive Criticism. Commentary was often biting and sarcastic, but always in the spirit of helping each other see new or alternative strategies and tactics.

What made the games interesting were the specialty rules. The game organizer would often create a special theme or rule or goal that everyone had to play by. Examples include "must maintain spotless reputation," "no Wonder building," "no tech trading" etc. Usually the method of winning was also specified (conquest vs AC). Some were pretty restrictive, others were just kinda goofy. But It forced us to learn new strategies instead of just using old reliable methods.

Sadly, I'm a Mac guy and no longer have a machine that will play Civ2. Those were good times. Some of our constant players included Scouse Gits (1) and [2], LaFayette, rjmatsleepers, Ben Kenobi, duke o'york, Bloody Monk and several others

Ben Kenobi posted just the other day that he still plays Civ2. Magic_gorter, maybe you should shoot Ben a PM to see if he's interested.

Glad to see there's still some Civ2 action.

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds very interesting. Since I started playing PBEM's I have learned a huge amount of techniques and principles. Its amazing how much depth there is to Civ II. I am still discovering hidden secrets after all these years!

The goofiest was an April fool game where we all proposed a silly rule. I can't remember all the rules but one of them was that we could only move certain units diagonally. There was also a game where we were stuck on a single tile island well away from anywhere and not allowed to leave it until AD1500 (or something like that). Happy days!

FYI, here are some links to old succession game threads. Gives a good idea of the self-imposed rules, the posting of turn sequences and startegy narrative, etc...

You're welcome to join whenever you want. The SG were not played a lot since I joined apolyton and CFC... but a year ago some players decided to start a new SG on CFC. That game (Deity 3+) was finished in januar by conquest....after that the three players (including me) who played till the end liked to do some more.....So for now we will play SG because it's a lot of fun to and not the same as playing a game on you're own.

I also am a Mac player, but I recently got a hand-me-down Acer and found that it plays Civ2 clumsily but effectively. So count me in. And, jrabbit, check it out.

                        Guys,

VirtualBox is free virtualization software for a bunch of platforms, including mac. This is how I play civ2 on mac and linux. It even has a "seamless" mode which means you can have civ running just like any other windowed app on your desktop. With this you will literally always and forever be able to run civ2.
