  • Freeciv Scenario Proposal

With the hunt for the CIV2 source code hitting the legal brick wall or becoming an invisble goose chase...

I am thinking it may be time to explore how easy/hard it would be to make a scenario in Freeciv.
We have had contact with the guys who do Freeciv many times and we know it is a good platform.

I am wondering if our combined wisdom could create a scenario where we could have all the cool
stuff and game aspects we dream of in CIV2. More than 7 civs, more cities, more army options!

What's more Freeciv is open source, no code hunting there! The game is like CIV2's evolved son!

Not sure how it works for events, but I am sure we could get around that!

We could devise a scenario idea (a simple medieval or WW2 campaign) and give it a shot!

    What say you all...?

Thanks for remembering Gareth. Right now, as I understand it, the current Freeciv supports only limited events. They have made a small amount of progress constructing some very basic actions.

As for creating a scenario, I think we would only be able to create something resembling a complex "mod-pack". We can edit the map, civs, rules, and graphics. After that, it's all game engine.

There is of course the option to just write our own code, but that would be a little bit more than scenario creation.

Now, as for editing the world, I think the old world editor for the previous build of Freeciv has been updated for the latest stable version.

So that's a plus. If all else fails, well, there is a good chance to edit the game file by hand. The good guys over at Freeciv made sure we can open up the game file in Notepad and edit. Editing is quite easy in fact. The structure of the game file is really easy to understand.

Take some time and check out the tree structure of the game and how the files are set up. I think there's a conversion program out there if I remember correctly, but still there will have to be a lot of brute force creation. Though, and I stress, there is a tremendous opportunity here. TREMENDOUS.

        Wait, wait. No, not yet.

"Full editor capability is scheduled for Freeciv 2.2"

Civworld is a map editor for Freeciv world maps. Originally created by Benjamin Drieu, it was modified by Daniel Gudlat and Thue Janus Kristensen, and is now maintained by Mike Kaufman. Civworld is a modified version of the regular GTK+ 1.2 client for Freeciv, and is currently being integrated into the main source tree. Full editor capability is built in for Freeciv 2.2. At the moment it is distributed in the form of a couple of files on !Gna. The README has all the details. There is also a Wind

I was playing Freeciv yesterday, I think there is definite potential there for expansion!
The city production controls and open-source nature of the game are quite good...

As Harry says, the events engine is in it's infancy, but CIV2's is not really complex anyway.
If people here get interested, then it might be the impetus the Freeciv dudes need to boost
the events handling. I am intriqued into getting under the bonnet of this game and seeing
if we can recreate the CIV2 magic with this totally moddable game.
