  • New Viking Age Scenario

I hope this works. I've uploaded a new scenario set in the viking age to this location (I hope!). If you can access it, please give it a try and let me know what you think. If you can't access it, please tell me what I'm doing wrong!

This scenario looks awesome!!! I love your graphical style (though the gray areas give me a headache and I had to turn it back to black). The map scale and faction sizes look ideal for a multiplayer game. I will propose one at Civ Webring. I don't know if you are into multiplayer games but if you are let me know!

Not sure if I will play as the Danes or the Norse first, the intro sets the scene well. Love the new cities, will probably plunder them at some point. Do you want a Wiki page?

        Hey McMonkey
Yes, a wiki page on the scenario league site (with screenshots if poss!) would be awesome, but I'd like a few people to play it first and let me know what they think so I can fix any problems. Maybe after you've tried the scen out you could give me an indication and if there's anything jarring I can sort it before a version goes on the wiki.
        Cheers guys

Hey, hope you've enjoyed trying the scenario out?!
I've now uploaded a new 'improved' version which I was hoping you might be able to create a wiki page for on the scenario league site, as suggested.
The new version can be accessed at the link above, as I simply overwrote the previous one.
            Thanks!

Will do JT. I have been so busy recently that I have not had a chance to start a multiplayer game of this scenario, though I still fully intend to. Have had no time whatsoever to play single player, sorry

You can now download this scenario from the Scenario League: The Viking Age by Jamestout

Sorry for the wait JT. I have not had nearly as much time as I would like to work on CivII projects recently. I had been doing a lot work with paint, notepad and the CivCity tool while it was quiet at my job in the evenings and weekends until some numpty infected the system with a virus he had on his USB key Now they have reinforced the IT security code and I cannot risk bringing stuff in on a USB which sucks as I was always very careful to virus scan etc . Maybe I can buy an old laptop and finish off some of my projects.

I am still planning to start up a game of Viking Age at Civ Webring so I will report back how that goes soon

                            Brief review

                            Liked this scenario. Lot of things about it make it fun. Here's a list;

1.) Nice terrain, units, cities, and icons.

                            2.) Good game balance.

3.) Played as the English, on King. Tough, but not too tough. Used a few tricks though. On turn 2, if you talk to the AIs, they will ask for peace. If you refuse, they will offer you mounds of gold (400-500) to go ahead and do peace. If you give the Britons a tech, you can stall them long enough to get infrastructure in place. You can also, on the same turn, extort gold from the AI to make peace, and then ask them to declare war on each other, which they will do, for only 50 gold. You might fix this by taking away most of the gold that the players start with. I can build the annual fair wonder on turn 2 this way. Maybe it should be more expensive.

4.) The AIs did pretty well. Without a methodical plan of campaign, they did a good job of harassing constantly. The first few games they took cities from me.

5.) Maybe make the two Irish factions different colors? Is this done on purpose?

6.) The Great Wall is a powerful wonder if it doesn't expire. Keep in mind it makes instant walls around any city taken by the owner, and it makes AIs accept peace every time you ask for it.

7.) The 1066 event is always a surprise. There I am. Conquering Britain. Shoving the damn vikings back into the sea. And then poof. I'm now William the Conqueror. Jarring, but I suppose it works.

8.) Liked the historical text events. But would like to see more events.

Overall, this is a fun scenario, but then I've only played as the Wessex faction. Nice central position, enemies on all sides. They've got advantages I don't. Nice tech tree w/tough multiplier. Good integration of techs, wonders, and improvements. Especially liked some of the improvement graphix. Interesting map, w/nice inclusion and orientation. Iceland seems a bit strange, but its colonization did occur during the period.
                            Lost in America.
