  • Creating a unit graphic update for Kobayashi's ST:BAQ

ST:BAQ is one of my all time favorite scenarios for MGE. So, I've been messing around trying to create a update for the units. There are a lot of nice Star Trek graphics on the forums and it always seemed a shame that they never seem to be used. So I though I'd put them to good use. This is what I have so far:

Credit goes to Broken Erica and Ghost of Disco for these fine ships.

Here are the problems I'm facing so far:

Red X's represent units that don't display very well. Most of these are from Broken Erica's TOT star trek units and while they look good in the TOT format, these ships look a little rough in MGE. The Sovereign and Galaxy class don't match the "smooth" look of the other Federation ships. The Klingon B'rel, Vor'cha, Negh'var and the Romulan cruisers and battleships have a sickly looking green color. Don't take offense, like I said it looks fine in the TOT format. So I'm looking for help in this department.

Yellow dots represent ships that I would like to replace with different graphics but I don't know what.

Green dots represent ships, torpedos, missiles, space stations that I would be willing to replace if any graphics were available but it's not a priority.

I haven't put too much thought for the planetary units yet but I would be willing to take any suggestions.

I finished creating my alternative set of graphics. Credit for many of these graphics goes to Ghost of Disco, Broken Erika, and Anarchyworkbest. I managed to create quite a few graphics from scratch. Only thing I was disappointed with was the Klingon Star Base. I couldn't find any clear image of a Klingon space station so I resorted to shading a Federation platform blue.

I also included an optional Rules.txt with edited units names to correspond with the replacement graphics. I made sure these changes did not mess up anything in the events files.

      Here is a preview:

Hi Riesstiu, Nice to see you. Koby's Battle for the Alpha Quadrant was a fun scenario. It definitely looks nice with the updated graphics

Do you think you'll ever make a sequal to your Homeworld scenario?

          Thanks.

Ah you remember Homeworld. That was my first attempt at creating a scenario. I didn't think it turned out to well, gameplay wise, to be honest. I focused to much on graphics modifications and avoided everything else.

I'm thinking bout creating a scenario using ToT. After messing around and creating some graphics, I find it much more versatile and robust for scenario design. Wish I had discovered ToT years ago. I'm throwing around some ideas know but I don't have anything set in stone.

Where can this Homeworld scenario be found?

              6th scenario down.

The biggest problem of the scenario is the complete misbalance between the factions. In my attempt to make an accurate representation of the Homeworld galaxy, I made the Taiidan Empire too powerful. I also never really bothered play testing it beyond the first few turns.

                      Thanks a lot.

This update gave the scenario new life and has indirectly resulted in 2 new PBEMs of it being created.

oh really? Brings back old memories of BAQ (and SWIns) PBEMs we used to run.

I actually more or less finished a DST version 3 featuring AI troop ship generators (with troops in them) before I went on my extended hiatus. As everyone was going TOT at the time, its stayed on my harddisk. Maybe I should release it......?

As a bit of trivia..... the intention was to eventually add the troopship generators to the Borg in BAQ too, to improve their expansion across the quadrant. Looks like its not gonna happen.
