  • Mystery Crash!

    I am suddenly getting a crash in my Eurasian Wars scenario, and I cannot work out what is going on!
    I have checked my tech tree with Merc's utility, and it checks out OK...I have scoured the rules....

    Cannot find a missing comma, or a typo anywhere...
    And the funny thing is, that I have played a test game for 2 weeks and have not changed the rules much at all.

    Now in 1947 (two years after scenario end) the crash happens...! Whaaaa?
    It's the typical crash that occurs when you have dodgy rules.txt errors...Perhaps I have missed something?

    I have the no-limits patch installed, and my gold is at 100k and more, and my population at 200 million.
    However - These kind of figures have never caused problems before...

    I am attaching the rules for the perusal of out resident experts...Anyone want to check over at my rules?

    It's annoying, as I want to finish my test game and release it, but cannot do that with a bug lurking!!!

    Is your rules file different from the one you sent me?

    Because I have been playing a few turns (I'm in 42 now, I'll send you a 1st report soon! ) and didn't notice any problem!

        Crashes partway into the game are usually due to tech loops.

          Captain obvious here.

          Crashes can also occur if you don't have enough ocean squares. Turn 31 or 32. (But you're sure to have enough of those, so pfft.)

          "All the lines that start with the @ symbol are header lines. Do not EVER change any of the header lines. If you do, Civ II will probably crash. Also, you should never add lines to or delete lines from rules.txt--not even empty lines. In some cases, the program counts lines to find data, and if you remove or add something, you can only cause trouble."

            @Tech:
            Indeed...I am feeling it is some kind of tech loop.

            @Exile:
            What you advise is interesting, I will check the rules tonight against the vanilla ToT rules...

              I started a new game with the rules and used the cheat menue for going fast through the techs. There was no problem, I can research everything. So I don´t think that it is a tech loop. When the game crashes, goes it only back to the desktop or does a message pop up?

                I checked too, and cannot find any obvious loop.
                And Merc's test utility also checks out -

                When I get the crash, it gives the message:

                Must be a rules thing...Or can Game/Lable/Pedia files cause errors too?

                  In my current save, the game seems to consistently crash
                  (with the above message) when I press the 'G'
                  (Go command) on any ground units...

                  Weird!

                    This isn´t a tech loop problem. I know it from my earlier scenarios which I made for FW. When I had a tech loop the game crashed immediately I discovered it and brought me back to the desktop without any error message.

                    Module "9" seems another text file. If there were any problems with the rules, it would show you the modul "3". Unfortunately I don´t know which file is mean. If you changed every text file I would first start a game only with the rules and for example the pedia text. When there are no problems I would include the game text, etc... Then you will find out, which text file is wrong. Or, the easier way, someone in this forum knows exactly what the error means.

                      Hm, in my game the "go to" order works. If the game crashed with the above message when using the order it should be something wrong with the menu text. Look at the orders:

                      @ORDERS
                      ...
                      Clean Up &Pollution|p
                      &Pillage|Shift+P
                      &Unload|u
                      &Go To|g
                      &Paradrop|p
                      Air&lift|l
                      Teleport|n
                      ...

                      If the "go to" command isn´t like this one, please change it. Maybe the game will work now.

                            I´ve changed the menu text from "Go To" to "no no". It seems that it doesn´t have any affect on the game. The goto order works without any problems. So this isn´t the problem
                            What files did you also changed?

                              I am going to run a series of tests on the rules...

                              I'll replace sections like @UNITS and @CIVILIZE with the default stats, and see if that makes a difference...

                              Back soon!
