  • Scenbuilding for ToT?

I have a scenario that I'm very proud of for FWorlds Civ2, and the main problem with it is that it could really benefit from being placed on a giga map (since it's multiplayer intended).

However, I am not too sure about whether or not the customizability extends to ToT just as it did with Civ2 FW. Can I make new units etc by altering the gif files? If so, how do I go about making the program recognize these instead of the little animations?

    AC,

The units.bmp is the file you need to edit, not units.gif.
Animations have proved impossible to edit, but you can get rid of them by renaming all the *.spr files and then you are left with normal units as per Civ2 FW.

If you have a FW scenario already, use CivConverter by Angelo Scotto to convert to ToT format, download here
    CivConverter

I am also working on a GUI to edit all the ToT files, taking me a bit longer than anticipated

Thanks a lot, Miner! Not the first time you've given valuable advice!

I'm off to download that lovely bit of converter wizardry!

A few exams and stuff later, and I'm back to working with ToT. Just a few newbie updates to my findings in case anybody else got stuck:

        1. Tech tree crashes still occur if Future Tech can't be researched by any given Civ. I eventually just (nil, nil)ed the ... Tech.

        2. Rules.txt crashes occur when copying build/wonders wholesale from old versions of Civ. It took me hours to find out what was wrong... ToT has a new buildable facility (the "Transporter") and it's hidden in the middle of the list. Forgetting to stick this in your new list will crash the game immediately upon loading.

        3. Rules.txt explains this to you, but it's easy to overlook it for weeks on end just like I did. The normal game uses sprite animations, not gif or bmps, for the game. If you don't want to hide or rename or otherwise alter your .spr files, make a few alterations to the units stats in the scenario rules.txt telling the game to override the .spr files.

Of course, seasoned ToT scenbuilders will know all this already, but let's be honest about it - I'm a greenhorn and I had to find out the hard way. Any other greenhorns reading this might not have to.
