  • Hammer of the English

There is an old, seemingly half complete scenario set in the time of the Scottish War for Independence, I believe it can be downloaded from the Civilization Fanatics site.

I've been thinking about the idea of making a new, better scenario (ToT or MPG, though currently doing some graphic work in MPG) set in the same era.

So, would anyone find this idea interesting, and if so, would they care to add/subtract from this unit list? (So far there are just the English and Scots, I'm not sure how to handle the other kingdoms that sort of played a role so none are listed)

    Both

    Serfs (Settlers)
    Archers
    Light Infantry
    Men-at-Arms
    Horsemen
    Spearmen

    Scots

    Laird
    William Wallace (unique)
    Andrew Murray (unique)
    Robert Bruce (unique)
    Pikemen
    Highlanders

    English

    Edward I (unique)
    Edward II (unique)
    Longbowmen
    Knights
    Lord

Being a rebellious Scot myself, this sounds like a very interesting scenario idea!

Plenty of units around to make this one happen!

      Indeed.

      William Wallace: http://apolyton.net/upload/thumb/88424_Wallace.bmp

Braveheart is a good movie on its own merrits, but its historical accuracy leaves a great deal to be desired, so any units drawn with that as a basis are something I'd like to avoid. Though that still leaves plenty of good potential units.

One thing that comes to mind, borrowing an idea that I read in a very good novel...

Templars. Not a great presence, but having a unit or two (if certain events occur and possibly techs are researched) would be interesting.

I intend, if possible, to have research be very relevant to this scenario. Just because technology barely progressed doesn't mean there aren't things that "research" can't handle very well.

      So anyway. just musing.

Fairline, if you're aware of this, could you (re)do the image of Wallace in your style? That would be lovely.

Bit busy trying to finish up PeG-ACW atm mate, but I will certainly be happy to make stuff up in the future. Perhaps you can make use of these 100YW units as placeholders to design the scenario, and then I'll make up more appropriate units when the scenario is finished:

Splendid! These will do wonderfully, and some may even be in the real thing (which ToT handles better, even if I'm used to MPG...)0

                    Now the next question.

As stated, I'd like to make research relevant to the Scots.

                    What exactly should that mean?

What should be available to "research"?

Pomarj, El Aurens, Hannibal's War, and a few other scenarios handle the idea of research in the sense I'd like to use here well. I'm just not sure what the Scots should be seeking to learn.

How about Bollocks Warmers so they can campaign in the winter? -40 can't be pleasant in a miniskirt.

                      Long pikes
                      Schiltrom
                      Raiding England
                      Feudal Levy

As long as you cover the period up to and including Bannockburn it should be interesting. After that, continuiing succession problems and misrule by nobles led to a sad decline of the country.
Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :

Money can buy happiness, just raise the luxury rate to 50%.
Money is not the root of all evil, it is the root of great empires.

...I do not need that mental image! : p

I'm not sure about "Feudal levy", but the others sound good. Figuring out how to make a formation of pikemen -work- is definately worth a "tech".

One thing that will be interesting to represent (and frustrating to the player of the Scots if I do it right!) is that the nobility was...shall we say...consistent in their loyalty to self interest. How to represent this would be tricky. Simply having them easily bribed or "switch sides" when "killed" doesn't seem to cover it.

Haven't decided exactly when to end it, but Bannockburn will be included (or at least, the time period will cover when that occured. Depending on where you are at that time, the battle may or may not happen.)

Using the extra bribing rules in ToT will come in handy for this period of history!

There ought to be a better way than just setting their bribery cost extremely low. Not sure what.

One thing that comes to mind, though I'd like the view of those playing...

Instead of generic "lord" or "laird" units...

Specific ones. Not necessarily a specific individual, but the Lord of (wherever).

I'm not sure how easy it would be to distinguish between them, barring finding out the coat of arms of the time and such, but its still a thought. There's far more unit slots available than I have any intention of using, so its certainly possible to expand it.

                            What would those interested suggest?

And speaking of suggestions: What about wonders?

I'd like to find a way to take advantage of all the ones I reasonably can, representing them however fits best.
