  • Adding more units

Hiya. I'm new to this forum. I've a question to ask:

I want to add new units. However, when I open the units.gif file, the images of the units are from the old CivII game. Is this the file I will need to edit? Or is there some other gif files for Test of Time?

Hello. Anybody home? Why isn't anybody replying to me?

There are no editors as of yet for the test of time sprite files. To edit still units for ToT, you've got to look at the units.bmp in either the Original, scifi, or fantasy directories.
None of the images in the main directory are meant for play.

Thanks for replying. However, I don't have any other units.* files in other folders. Do I have to full install to get them?

There were several detailed discussions about creating new units a few months ago. Check back in the old threads, and you should be able to find them easily.

Essentially, when displaying units, the game first looks for *.spr files in the scenario folder. If it doesn't find them (or if the option in the patched version is turned off), it defaults to units.bmp--still in the scenario folder. Failing to find that, it falls back on units.gif in the scenario folder. If none of those files are found, the game then searches in the same order in the game type folder (just "above" the scenario folder level). If no files are found there, the last resort is the Civ II root folder, where it looks for the files (again) in the same order.

It's been a while since I wrote about this, so I might have gotten the order slightly wrong. I'm sure the clever folks here will catch any mistakes.
