  • Test of Time GUI problems (using the keyboard)

    I've noticed several problems with the Test of Time UI. Are these generally-known problems? Are there workarounds?

    (1) I play on a laptop that has four cursor keys, not eight. What are the keyboard commands to move diagonally?

    (2) The top menu has TWO commands that use "C" for a short cut. How do you open the civilopedia from the keyboard?

    (3) In the civilopedia, when you have a list of topics (such as the list of miltary units), you can highlight a topic, but then there seems no way to read it except by double clicking it with the mouse. Some
    keyboard key should open the high-lighted topic, what is it? (E.g., the space key should work in a standard windows UI.)

    (4) Often I cannot get the menus to work at all from the keyboard. E.g., a unit is selected, I can move it with the mouse, but if instead I type alt-o, the order menu might not open.

    I inadvertently discovered that in civ1, an attempt WAS made to provide keyboard equivalents for movement. ctl-a moves north (equivalent to the up arrow); vtl-b moves NE, and so on around the compass, with ctl-h moving NW. However ctl-c does not work, so there is no "move east" equivalent.

    For civ1, the rather confusing use of ctl-b, ctl-d, ctl-f and ctl-h solves my diagonla move problem (on a laptop); NOW, what about civ2?

      These replies apply to vanilla Civ2, rather than ToT, but I bet they'll work.

      1) Home = NW
      PgUp = NE
      End = SW
      PgDn = SE

      On my laptop, I can activate NumLock and use 789,uio,jkl as a keypad. This is problematic because I often forget to hit the shift key when I'm trying to (i)rrigate or (u)nload.

      4) I think you *must* have a mouse or equivalent to perform certain functions (activating a unit from a stack or within a city, rearranging your workers from inside the city screen). Also, some screens (F1 city production, F4 city happiness) can only be made to go away be clicking on OK. I could never find any combination of Enter/Tab/Esc that would work.
