  • Comments on new graphics.

I just started a game on TOT and am disappointed. The screen is so dark I can hardly read it. The dark background of the city display makes it hard to read also. I find that the units are hard to identify, and I can't tell what civ they are from. Is there some option to help? Normal civ is just fine.

I just found that it was a bit blurry. I've got screen resolution set at 1024 X 768

What colour setting do you have on your system (i.e. 16-bit)?

If you don't know how to check/change this setting, right-click on any empty space on your desktop; click PROPERTIES; click SETTINGS; there should be a pull-down menu with the heading COLORS or something like that.

If you change your color setting, than click APPLY.

You can't play the game with less then 16 bits graphics. It just refuses to start then.

I agree that you indeed have to get used to the new structure, and the background is black indeed. Though the graphics of the terrain and the units are very beautifull in my opinion. And indeed, the units aren't 'icons' anymore, and therefor it's a little harder to identify them.

But that's what you get when you go from 256 colors in to 16 bits colors.

I think you just should get used with it.

To tell what civ a unit belongs to, look at either the border around the health key or the color of the unit itself. Every unit has an area that is "painted" in the color of its civilization--like a uniform.

I think cyber is right on this one. When we went from 256 color to 16bit for the units and terrain we had to do ALOT of tweeking to get the units to show up well in the terrain. With all the new colors it's just that much easier for the units to blend in. It takes a little getting used to at first. Also the game starts slightly zoomed in on the map. The default 1 to 1 zoom can be enabled by hitting shift-z.

Is it dark and dismal, like SMAC was, before they brought out the Gamma correction?

                Yes it is!

Bumping this to get some attention to the graphics again. Any new tips or tricks to improve them? Settings, resolution etc?

                It's dark!

                Thanks,

Sorry for bringing this up again.

I really like the terrain, but I have problems with the units. The biggest one is telling which civ other units belong to. I can right-click on them to see the info, but that's not very practical (only tedious).

I don't want to whine too much because I really like the game. But is there anything you guys (the ToT team) can do in a patch to improve it? In Civ2 the Romans were white. Their cities are in ToT too, but (as far as I can tell) not the units.

Time after another I get attacked by units I thought were my allies, I attack units I'm at peace with and have to "cancel action" etc.

I know that SMAC got some criticism for the dark graphics and difficulty to tell one unit from another. I also think they fixed it somehow.

It isn't as dark as SMAC (then again, I didn't think SMAC was that dark either).

For those who use 1024 X 768 graphics (e.g me), all you have to do is zoom out twice and it'll be fine

I got ToT today, and so far it's pretty cool.

Some alternate backgrounds that attempt to minimise the 'busy' info screens can be found here...

My comment on the graphics for ToT:

                            THEY SUCK! REAL BAD.

If anyone from Microprose happens to see this, why?!?! why?!?!?! why do you feel you have to gut the graphics?!?! they are FINE JUST THE WAY THEY ARE in Civ II. In Tot I can't tell whats what. The Marine unit???? what the heck??? The programmers that made CTP, ToT and SMAC all went to the same graphics class, they must have.
