  • Madison's War

    Since my PhD thesis is sort of buggering from time to time, I decided to take a little break from the 16th century and make a little scenario around the War of 1812, the Mexican War of Independence and the American Expansion - since there is no such thing so far.

    Starting will this one supposedly in June 1812 and it shall cover the period up until the War between the States, i.e. roughly around 1860.

    Progress so far:

    * Tech tree - done, save maybe those event-based techs;

    * Graphics - 66% done;

    * City placement - done;

    * Events - until now only in my head

    Attached is a *.sav file (for ToT), if someone might want to check the positions of the cities?

        Looks promising!

        Feel free to use any of my War of 1812 units (I see you've made use of my mid-19th century US Dragoon unit. )

        I'll definitely be keeping tabs on this project!

            It's a great concept. Manifest Destiny and the expansion of the United States strikes me as an excellent subject for a scenario. If you need some help with events, let me know.

            Some of the cities on your map didn't yet exist in 1812 while others had different names (Toronto was York). Throw away your modern map and find some historical ones. Here's a good place to start: http://www.military.com/Resources/Hi...story_Maps.htm

            Good luck!

              Excellent topic. Manifest Destiny is perfect for the Civ engine.

              City placement looks a little off on the map, specifically the Great Lakes/Midwestern area.

              I would place Buffalo at 121,73, Cleveland at 118,74, and Pittsburgh at 121,79. London shouldn't be coastal and Toronto(York) shouldn't be left of Buffalo. Cincinnati should probably be at 115,85.

                Thank you for your input!

                Now that the city placement is done, I guess the next best thing is to start getting clues about flags in ToT events, too.

                By the way, is there a chance to combine the conquest of a certain number of predefined cities to a max. elapsed turn? For instance, if a US player would be able to capture most cities in Lower & Upper Canada he would get a 'conquest of Canada' event as well as the British would be forced to sign a peace treaty?

                I have some more information about the what's what:

                (1) line-up

                Russia (filler civ, 1 city: Novoarkhangelsk = Sitka, AK)
                Haiti (filler civ, 2 cities)
                Spanish Empire (antagonist for Mexico. US)
                Mexico (playable, 2 cities @ start)
                United States (playable)
                British Empire (antagonist for US)
                Indian Tribes (antagonist for US/westward expansion)

                (2) Manifest Destiny

                The main idea is fighting the War of 1812, maybe win it, whatever, and then use all those free spaces between the US and the West Coast for expansion. Maybe you fight the Mexicans, should you defeat the British in 1812, maybe you fight them again, etc.

                The Native Americans also play a role (Seminole Wars, War of 1812, westward expansion), as well as the idea that Texas secedes from Mexico.

                More to come soon ...

                  Is there a way ...

                  ... to get rid of some of the units' health bars? Like 'em?

                    Good to see you Steph

                    I have some US and Mexican War of 1846 units somewhere; I'll dig 'em out if you want.

                    Use Merc's SpriteGen for raising the health bar out of view (new version 1.1 posted in a recent thread about sprites):

                    Edit, if you need a hand with this give me a shout. You basically need to select 'use spr' for just the mountain units in advanced rules, then make a units.bmp with just the mountain gfx, and run it through SpriteGen

                      What's the point of using units to create giant mountains?

                        Hi Gareth, it is good to be back, too

                        I shall attach the units I compiled so far - so anyone can start muttering about them, too

                        Well, I thought the Rockies are a formidable barrier to east/westward expansion and, furthermore, it'd looks cool methinks

                        By the way, does this health bar-raising work only for a couple of the units or does it work for all units?

                            SpriteGen allows you to select which units you want to raise the health bar on. If you use the default 768 pixel unit icon height setting, this will work for the normal shift-z zoom view.

                            BTW, you know you can make an area of the map impassible in ToT with advanced rules?

                            When does your scenario start and finish BTW? If its 1812, then the AWI units are a bit anachronistic. You should use Napoleonic War gfx with shakos rather than tricorne hats. I'm pretty sure I have gfx for most of your units somewhere on my HD. Do want me to make up a unit set?

                              Well, I know of this impassable terrain feature - but, as pointed out above, I think they just look 'cool'.

                              And, Gareth, please do post them units here as I might want to continue this scenario into the 1860ies and beyond ...
