  • So I got an old copy of Civ2 Multiplayer Gold…

By paying a few Euros’ to a good friend, I got loads of old games off of him. (well five games, but most of them seem very entertaining)

Among them was Civ2 Multiplayer Gold, I played Civ2 vanilla to death in the late nineties and early 2000’s (after the disappointment of Civ3) but never bothered to join the online community.

Now that I have it almost by chance stumbled upon it, what should I do? Did the expansion packs add anything of interest except the scenarios? Are any of the scenarios that come with the game worth playing?

Are there a few downloadable fan-made scenarios that have “stood the test of time”, that I must see? (I know there are lots of scenarios for civ2, please just point me to the best of the best )

Is there still an active MP community?

I'll be grateful for any replies.

Load up, link up, join the succession game, persuade people that CivII should not die...

As far as I know, most players enjoy scenarios when they try them, but they play regular Civ2 more often. There have been many threads about peoples' favorites (try a Google search) or look thru the Scenario pages for lists of award winners - probably not updated in years. The Spanish site has some excellent older scens, as does CivFanatics. If you like fantasy/ancient period scens, I can recommend some, but I haven't played many modern ones, which seem more popular with the current designers.

IMO the best regular Civ2 action in the online community is the Game of the Month at the other Civ2 website, CivFanatics. But you can sometimes find a succession game here, or a new PBEM game (play by email). Check the other forums to see if people still do MP. AFAIK there are still a few active players, but the numbers have dwindled.

Check the Civ 2 Scenario League forum here on Apolyton: there you'll find a small but quite alive community of people who design or simply enjoy good scenarios!

And you'll be amazed by the quality of some of the more recent ones (especially compared to the ones that came with the game!).

Including a rather fun Diskworld scenario by Cyrion himself.

Many of those scenarios, Blood & Iron among it, are quite old and lacking in standard. Some are real cool though!
