  • Civ Ants, an upgrade

    Hello Scenario League,

It's been a couple of years now that I have been ghosting and quietly play testing, but I have two reasons to think that I'll be welcome back:

    1) I was a first-time scenario maker but I joined apolyton and said that I was going to make a scenario, then I actually finished it!

    2) This is a pretty cool group that way.

The theory behind Ants was to have a full build game from first nest to empire, different tribes representing various famous ant species. A bit off of the beaten path, but ants have long embodied human co-operation, construction, competition, and conquest, and the civ engine makes for a great game.

Anyway, my career is back on track, but entry level (photovoltaics manufacturing), and my girlfriend just told me she is pregnant, so while I might not have a lot of extra time, I'm sure that I need this.

I hope that some of you will join me (again). I bring to the table this time slightly improved computer-art skills, and have met a couple of people that really like the scenario.

This time around would like to make the following improvements:

new title screen (including spell check)
    only move-2 barbarians from huts
redo food icon (a small sugar crystal should be nice)
fix, but limt slavers to revolt and bribe (I remember impossible?)
add an ant high council (or prevent pop-up?)
    finish spaceship dll
adjust food paradigm, lower high end
    new special resource names
fix bulldogs send queen out on a raft
more water, rework terrain (moist, wet, near river)
do it in TOT (why not)
    underground nest for capital
    give the units another go

One of the best play-features of the game is killing a species first quee to eliminate the faction. In TOT, we may take that battle underground by letting 2nd map workers dig tunnels and caverns. Can the AI handle it? To be worked out, just an idea now.

Anyway, let me know if anyone is interested to help out on this one. As far as I know, the link at the bottom of my name still takes you to the original scenario download.

    Welcome back!

I'll gladly help you as much as I can (i.e. not much ): I was really interested in your development even though I never had the time to test it!

          civconverter hiccup

I've been in Catfish's cave for a while. I am getting an error though when running civconverter; first windows asked me which application was used to make a .scn file, then when I browsed and selected Civ II for the heck of it, the new error is that I don't have a valid Windows 32 program. Does this sound familiar to you guys?

Do you have the most up to date CivConvertor version?

And did you copy the file to be converted into the Convertor folder?

              hey guys,

sorry about that. didn't solve the problem, but ran it on antoher pc and the program seemed to work. Anyway, everything loaded into a new magic file called 'converted'. Hasn't opened yet though in TOT, still thinks an outdated version, so tomorrow I'll try to find the most up to date CivConverter version. (cheers)

At this rate, it's going to be a long project. Anyway, the point this time is 'perfect', rather than 'finish', so no dramas.

              G'night!

ok, we're converted (officially); need to take it through Catfish's checklist, then really get to work.

In the last version, left out humans entirely, although someone recommended, for example, garbage cans. Mostly because I didn't want to detract from the antiness of it, and still don't. Does anyone have a fresh perspective on this one?

You mean to replace the human civ? How about a red ant colony, the black ant's nemesis?

Tecumseh, that's just the cheasiness I wanted to avoid. Maybe with all this event space though that I've heard about it, I'm going to take you as serious. Let's have a picnic.

                          Hi Jarec,

Someone mentioned red ants and black ants during the original. Already leveled up past that though... Current roster is:

                          Leaf-cutters
                          Carpenter Ants
                          Weavers
                          Harvesters
                          Fire Ants
                          Bulldogs
                          Army Ants

No plans at the moment to change this part, the ant civs came out pretty well (unless I'm missing a really famous ant that warrants bumping one from the list?)

Maybe you could dowload the original MGE scenario and give it a couple of turns?

Cheers--> maybe a quick mini black vs. red to try and get a 2nd 'tunneling' map tested?

Did as requested. Good job reworking the improvements, and the village unit in particular is great. Although I must say that I don't prefer looong empire-building, 400+ turn scens. Everyone to their own, though. Noticed something: if you intend to put in more water, please put in more sea units. I only noticed 2 in the MGE version: the leaf raft ( ) and the aqua ant. Not an especially varied selection. Maybe a bark boat added in? (Not very factual, I admit, just an idea.)

Just wondering, do the different ant civs have unique tech trees? I don't know since I don't really have the time to test that far. I have a scen of my own that I'm fiddling with too.

I'm still wondering if you're serious about putting in picnics/humans. I immediately imagined red and white checkerboard terrain with fruits and vegetables as units!

Or, if you really are serious, you could devote a whole part of the map to a gigantic picnic cloth, complete with immovable food units that generate cash/unit rewards when destroyed. Immovable units protecting the "food" too, aka plastic food wrap!
