  • Rules trouble - Need another set of eyes!

    Hi there!

I have a little problem with the rules set for Dictator 7. I am hoping someone can help me out, as it is driving me barmy!

Whenever a unit from one civ meets another (EG: German and Russian) there is an instant crash to Desktop, no error message.
I suspect a rules problem is to blame here, but cannot see what...It also might be a bug in the improvement or leader area?

My brain is melting, and I cannot find any trouble with the tree, as I loaded a default CIV2 tree have copied my custom
tree back into the file without mishap...That and the instant crash makes me wonder if another area is the cause of woe?

Could anyone (without tired eyes like mine) help me out by looking in the file (the usual suspicious areas) for any bugs?

Not sure what causes a crash when units meet, perhaps this has been seen before?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    1. Does "meet" mean attack or just move next to?

    2. Do you mean that it doesn't happen if you use a different rules file in Dictator 7?

    3. I just put the D7 rules file in the Dictator 6 scen folder, opened D6 and everything seems fine? Is there any reason why you suspect the rules file in particular ?

    4. Have you tried putting D6 rules into the D7 scen folder and opening D7?

    5. How about posting the contents your Dictator 7 scen folder? This one reminds me of the incorrect Describe file that you had a couple of years ago. The problem file was isolated by systematically replacing each file in the scen folder by a known "good" version.

I can't see anything. Try removing the text files one by one from the directory and replicating the events. If you mean meeting as in touching and not attacking it could be something relating to diplomacy, which is a game.txt problem.

The problem occurs when two units move side by side, no attack needed.
I replaced the tech tree with a default CIV2 tech tree and the problem stopped. That was what flagged my suspicions...

There is no describe file present, and this problem happened before there were any other text files present in the folder.

          @Ciaran
At least a part of your problem is solved.

From systematic scientific analysis rather than eyeballing, it is my conclusion that at least a part of the problem originates from the following:

          RR has Plu as prerequisite.
          Plu has RR as prerequisite.

          Analytical details upon request.

            Aha!

Doh, doh, and a thrice times doh! That is the one thing I have changed since Dictator 6!
The derived tech from blackclove's "no,no" equation is the radio tech this time, and not plumbing!

I can even recall when I made the boo-boo now... When I first made the new tech tree, I copied the old twice-removed techs.
And I forgot to take stock of the new changes and ended up with the dreaded cross-tech! What a blind fool I have been!

It all seems to be working now, as when I move units together, I get the diplomacy popup, not a crash...Good show!

Progress can now resume at haste!

Thanks, Agricola - Again your sharp eyes come to the rescue!

My bloodshot eyeballs really had nothing to do with sorting out this one.

Your report that things worked fine with vanilla CIV2 rules and a logical process of elimination did all the work.

              GL with D7.

I am currently wrestling with the proper city placement for the USSR...!

So is Dictator 7 on a world map or the European map? I'm getting confused here..
