I am getting quite into modifying Fairline's unit graphics, mostly cut and paste attempts. There are a number of medieval units by Mathias Koster that I want to replicate but I cannot get the colours I need using Microsoft Paint.

Can anyone recommend a free Paint type program that I can download? It does not need to be too advanced as I am no master artist, its just that Paint's palette is too hard to work with.

Also, if anyone has any useful tips on shading and other techniques then I would appreciate some guidance. I am gradually getting better at modifying units and I would like to be able to make sets of my own one day

double click colors in paint and you can change them!!!

You can cut and paste the actual MGE palette into a bitmap and use that as a basis for editing graphics. That should be a bit easier. Look on the SL pages.

MS Paint

Get yerself paint shop pro. I picked up PSP7 and later PSP8 in 'Game' for 10-15 quid.

Thanks for the info, I will have a go at finding the MGE pallet but I guess buying a proper programme would be best, I was just being a cheapskate

Yes. Those are the colors that can be used in MGE. Use that when editing units and such in MS Paint. Your colors should remain consistent then.

Also, if you do get a better paint program you can load that palette and use it. That way there won't be any surprises when you see a graphic in-game.

Of course, ToT is able to support a much wider range of color...

OK, here's my first attempt at a mod using the palette + a HUGE amount of cut'n'paste!

I'm quite pleased with the result. If anyone was wondering he is supposed to be a Venetian Armoured Infantryman from the 14th century!
