  • Freeciv 2.1.0 Released

We've finally managed to get Freeciv 2.1.0 out the door! Grab it from freeciv.org!

Since the final release is out now, you're all officially credited as Freeciv contributors through the Amplio tileset; here: http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/People#Graphics

If your name is misspelled or something else is wrong, feel free to edit the page to fix it.

Thank you again for donating your work to the Freeciv project! The new eye-candy is a huge selling point for this new release.

We get this kind of question about Freeciv alot in these forums.

I don't thing there are formal limits per se - the only limit is probably the size of an internal variable in Freeciv (65536 or so) and the available memory in your computer. The GUI allows for map sizes up to 29000 tiles, but maybe larger maps can be forced.

There was a similar discussion here about two months ago:

            Thank you for your answer.
I have not yet tried the version 2.1. I expect will do so as soon as I finished working on redfront. I think Freeciv has enormous potential.

              You're welcome!

It'd be really cool if we could get a scenario project for Freeciv started soon. If we could put together a setting and concept for the scenario, I could start writing a first draft of the rules.

For scenarios, has there been a feasible FreeCiv events language made yet?

                    That depends.

In theory it's more powerful than Civ2's. But in practive it's certainly not as mature and full-featured yet. Or at least I don't think so. It hasn't been put to the test by talented scenario makers yet!

Then we must put it to the test.

I think if we decide on a scenario matter, then we can list the things we need events to do.

That's the best way to work out what is needed...

I think a scenario about the English Civil War would be good as there are only two main sides to worry about. Also this war has not been covered by any recent scenarios.

The Scots would be disapointed to learn that there were only two main sides in the English Civil War.

All the more reason to make an ECW scenario, to educate me more thoroughly

I think John Ellis' map of Britain from 'Seize the Crown' would be ideal as it is a good scale and most major cities are in place. Can you convert CivII maps for use in Freeciv?

This is a tricky part. There is a convertor for .mp files, but not the more complex saves or scenarios. It should be possible to write one though. But for now, I can hack together a map using Freeciv's editor. Will post it here when done.
