  • Of Celts and Iberians

I have only just got around to playing this classic by scenario by Jesús Balsinde. I am very impressed and decided it needed to be added to the Scenario league.

I have done a little modification to the graphics:

There is a link to the download of the game in its original form included!

    Here are some screenshots:

If you have not played this classic before I would highly recommend you give it a go!

    Enjoy

It is a great scenario. Here's the units file I made several years ago for it. It's a bit pants now!

nice units, both of you, guys

.. time to re-play that great classic ancient by master JB...
"Dilexi iustitiam, odivi iniquitatem, propterea morior in exilio" [PAPA GREGORIUS VII +1085] - ("He amado la justicia, he odiado la iniquidad, por eso muero en exilio") - ("I loved justice, I hated unfairness, that's why I die in exile") - (J'ai aimé la justice, j'ai détesté l'iniquité, c'est pourquoi je meurs en exil") - ("Ich liebte Gerechtigkeit und hasste Ungerechtigkeit, deshalb sterbe ich im Exil")

I just cut and pasted the units. All credit goes to Gareth!
I will be adding some of those units into my modified units file.

I disagree that they look pants. They are just what I want to see when I play a game of Civ II. If I wanted 3-d animated units I would play Civ III/IV.

The beauty of this period of Gareth's work is that an amature like me has a chance to do minor mods and cut/paste jobs to get the units I need for a project.

Regarding Of Celts and Iberians. Last night I managed to stay up until nearly 3am playing. I have not done that with a scenario in quite a long time.

There is something puzzling me though. Why do catapults have the Alpine ability?

This is one of my top 10 scenarios too McWerd. One of the things that amused me was that Jesus had an event generating 2 cartoon characters (I forget their names; they're the Spanish equivalent of Asterix the Gaul). I checked them out on t'internet and made some pics of 'em. They're the chappie in blue armour and his caveman-like mate )

I have just added Taurus and Jabato back into the game as well as some other units changes and new icons etc... I will have to check out the comic. Cyrion's Lost Legions had a comic background too. Whats next? Dan Dare, Usagi Yogimbo?

I also made a couple of minor changes to the rules file. I took the alpine ability away from the catapult and reduced the Testudo's movement to 1 like all the other infantry. I don't know if these were mistakes or carefully thought out choices. To me they seem strange!

The game is a real blast. I aborted my first attempt after losing momentum in a big way. I was deceived by the way in which the scenario seems very easy to begin with. The vastness of the map soon swallows up your reserves so concentrating on goals is important. I am having more fun with my second (proper) attempt.

The map is superb. Lots of varied terrain, mountain passes, river valleys. This is the way all maps should be!

I wonder if it will play as a PBEM with a little bit of converting? Perhaps something to do another time! I should be working on Fortress Europe instead of playing OCI, but sometimes it is good to have fun playing a scenario, helps you keep in mind what is fun about the game!

              Alas!

When I try to run the scenario, Civ 2 quits (but the music still plays) and I get this:
              AppName: civ2.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: civ2.exe
              ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0001515b
Anyone know what that means? (And how do I fix it?)

GhostOfDisco: I got the same crash when trying the version on the SLeague Wiki. I'm not sure what the problem is, but the version over at CivFan works fine.

                  Strange!

I had not double checked that the DL worked as it was just a zipped version of the one I was playing from.
I just downloaded it to see if it would run OK and everything worked fine for me!

I am not the most technically minded person but if anyone works out what the bug is I will gladly re-upload it.

It seems a bit pointless having it on the SL if it does not work for some people. In the meantime you could dl the other version and if you wanted the new graphics then copy and paste them across!

EDIT: I just thought, could it be that you are using FW or CiC and this scenario is designed for MGE

I'm using MGE. I tried downloaing the scenario from the wiki again, and it still crashes Civ II to the desktop. I've no idea what's causing it. AFAICT the only difference between the version here and the version at CivFan are the graphics but the CivFan version works fine.

Yeah, I tried that and it worked. Made up a graphic update for the terrain, cities, and a scant few of the units (the impassible terrain and the Roman and Carthaginian forts.)

Now the Celtiberian Republic is the largest nation on the peninsula, and I've even taken over the Roman HQ at Emporion! (Is there any way to negotiate with the Romans and Carthaginians?) Though the Roman's shouldn't mind - I've been keeping the Phoenicians busy by moving into their territory (they seem to have lots of elephants and battering rams), thus keeping soldiers away from Italy.

Also, what CS city graphic would be best for the Iberian city style? (Already have good Celtic and Roman styles)

Could the crash problem be to do with the units/city/icon files. I normally save them as PNG files. Maybe your PC prefers GIFs?

I think it must be something to do with this as I have not altered the events and only made very minor alterations to the rules (Catapult not Alpine and the Turtle's move reduced to 1 like other infantry).

                            Ok. I'm now officially confused.

I tried copying the files one by one from the Wiki version to the CFC version to see if I could isolate the problem. I can no longer reproduce the crash. If I start up either copy of the scenario it works. This is all very bizzare, but at least it works.

The ways of Civ are mysterious indeed!

Glad its working though I would really like to know what the problem was!
