  • Barbarian Activity Preference

I'm working on adding a level of barbarian activity to the Roman scenario I've been working on. I need some honest opinions. When playing a game, which level of barbarian activity do you usually play with?

I want the barbs to be frequent enough to warrant worrying about border cities, but infrequent enough to not have to worry more about the barbs than say Hannibal marching down the boot. Any ideas?

When playing vanilla civ, I use "Restless Tribes". It provides a good challenge to force proper garrisons on the frontiers, but you don't have to spend too much time mopping up hordes of annoying, low threat barbarians.

There is another, higher level as well, which you can set by editing the Rules file. (I think) There was a thread about it years ago, and there may be a tip as well. (I'm too lazy to check.)

I think it's done by hex editing. It's called Barbarian Wrath. That might be a bit much for this scenario as I've seen whole maps filled with barbarians on that level.

In a perfect scen, there would be no random barbs, only those that the designer's fiendish mind generated via events.
Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :

Money is not the root of all evil, it is the root of great empires.

Yes, well that might be true, but I don't want to use up all my event space. I'm trying to use the game engine as much as possible in this one, with the barb changing techs being gifted when certain objectives are achieved.

For vanilla, I like the full legion of doom treatment!

For scenarios, I use no auto-barbs, but control them with events.

I used a barbarian setting in Warlords of China, esp to get pirates. I supplemented with event created ones.
