    I have checked my map and Groningen is slightly to the west of Essen if you draw a strainght line north (I have attached a screenshot as this explaination is not very well worded!).

    I could move it W or SW one square but I don't think it is far enough out of place to bother doing that. Maybe I am too lazy. Also, if I move it west it would become a coastal town. Not a big problem as I could use CivCity to stop it building ships (love that utility!).

    If I find time I will see about shifting Groningen, thanks Stef

      Atlantic Wall

      I would like to discuss the pros and cons of a new (ish) idea.

      Basically I have replaced the Town terrain (originally a marker for city placement purposes and aesthetics) with a terrain called Defences. This terrain is high move cost (6) and average defence (2). It will also be non stackable and will have no roads on it. It will be placed along coastlines and defence lines (such as the Atlantic Wall, Mareth and Gothic lines etc...) to force the enemy to spend one turn exposed on the beachhead or tangled in the barbed wire/minefields. Hopefully the AI will use this time to counterattack (we can but hope).

      I have used this idea in Bonaparte 3 to help the British defend their coastline and I would like to use it to aid the AI's defence and hinder the human (Allied) player.

      Like the Industrial terrain I may make it possible to transform Defences to plains by using Strategic bombers. I will have to see how aggressively the AI's fighters try and prevent this.

      Your thoughts are welcome. My normal reaction is to disagree but wise (common sense) comments normally sink in after a few days and I change my mind eventually

        When one creates a CITYTAKEN > CREATEUNIT event, will it repeat every turn after that city is captured if you miss out the JUSTONCE line or is just the one unit created that turn?

        (Hope this makes sense!)

        I refer to the MGE events.

          Or to word it slightly differently:

          If I leave out the JUSTONCE line from the following event will it keep activating unless an enemy unit blocks the spawning co-ordinates?

          @IF
          CITYTAKEN
          CITY=CALAIS
          ATTACKER=ALLIES
          DEFENDER=AXIS
          THEN
          CREATEUNIT
          UNIT=TIGER
          OWNER=AXIS
          HOMECITY=NONE
          LOCATIONS
          110,114
          ENDLOCATIONS
          @ENDIF

          If not, can you make the CREATEUNIT part of the event repeat after a city is taken? This is for MGE!

            Please could some clever person answer my question (post above) as I am too stupid to work out the answer myself or rather it would take ages to test out the theory and that would be a waste if someone already knows the answer.

                No, it should not keep spawning. I believe that if you want continual spawning using a city capture trigger then you should gift a tech upon capture. As long as the tech is present (I can't remember who you should give it to if it matters) the unit should keep spawning.

                  Thanks Harry. I thought it was unlikely to continue spawning each turn but I had a bit of doubt because of the presence of the JUSTONCE line! Now I know I can make other plans.

                  The main area I want to strengthen is the Atlantic wall and I should have several spare techs to give to the Germans if they lose Caen or Calais etc... This should allow the creation of a counterattacking force. I would also like to find a way of representing the Battle of the Bulge (or similar).

                  Obviously using ToT would make this much easier but I enjoy the challenge of getting the most out of MGE

                    MGE is obsolete. Everything that can be done with MGE has been done. There's not much of a challenge there.

                      @techumseh

                      I disagree. CivII is not obsolete. That's like saying Chess is obsolete because someone has invented the X-Box! If everyone took that attitude then CivII would have been abandoned long ago and we would all be playing CivIV

                      I think there are still new things that can be achieved with MGE (at least for me). What I meant by a challenge was that I like to squeeze as much out of the available events space as I can by making every event count. Obviously a larger memory capacity would be nice but you work with what you are given.

                      I do agree that ToT has greater potential for a talented designer like yourself and I hope to make a ToT version of all my games at some point. Scenarios like Operation Market Garden and Lost Legions are pushing the boundaries forward.

                      Personally I do not like working with ToT, though I hope I will get used to it. I don't like the look or feel of it and there is no potential for multiplayer games which is also a turn off. I do like the extra units and events space and some other features like impassable terrain but for me MGE is the one I love

                          MGE and ToT are just paint and brushes, it is the artist who makes the work that is important!

                            Just had an idea and wanted to know if it would work.

                            To threated the Allied convoys, in the original Europa, I spawned Axis subs in the French Atlantic coast ports at regular turn intervals. The idea was that when the Allied armies captured these ports they would block the event and the U-Boats would cease to be a threat.

                            The problem was that the U-Boats tended to just congregate around the harbour mouths and present an easy target for Allied aircraft while not threatening the convoys.

                            I attempted to remedy this by spawning some U-Boats in the Atlantic. The problem with this approach was that U-Boats would continue to appear even if the Axis had no ports left!

                            My idea is to create U-Boats out in the Atlantic with home cities like Brest and Bordeaux instead of NONE. What I need to know is whether these spawned units will dissapear (or not spawn) if their home city is in enemy hands?

                            I am aware that this is probably not a NEW idea but it is one I have not thought of before and I would like to know if it would work

                              You will have to experiment to find out. In ToT, I would just create a flag to turn off the event if a particular city, or group of cities was captured.

                                Fair enough. I just thought that if someone knew the answer already it may save me a lot of time testing it out.
                                I thought the Apolyton community was a place where people could share ideas and their experience but maybe I am off course!
