If we forego the tradition of setting a theme and make any scenario eligeble for the contest, that would allow the contest to take place without any extra effort for any of the contestants.

We could forget about the secret identity thing and just let the members vote (secretly), 1 vote per category or a maximum of 7 votes.

Ancient Ages (3000BC to 476AD)
Middle Ages (477AD to 1491AD)
Age of Discovery (1492 - 1825)
Industrial Revolution (1826 to 1938)
World War II (1939 - 1945)
Atomic Age (1946 - The Present)
Fictional Scenarios (Fantasy, Sci-Fi etc.)

so there could be a maximum of 7 winners

criteria for the contest could be

1. released between Dec 06 to Nov 07
2. new scenario (defined as not using the same map as a previous version)
3. download page posted on the S-Leaue site
4. any winner would require a minimum of 2 votes
5. you can't vote for yourself but you can submit more than one entry

All entries would be posted on the first post of a thread and this would be updated till Nov. Then we vote in December and announce the winner after christmas.

Sounds like fun, though with that long list of eras, you may have just one entry in each category, if that.

How about accepting any scenario from any period, but dividing the entries according to the experience of the designer?

Beginner, intermediate and expert: self-designated, subject to challenge in the forum.

I just picked the eras to match the S-League website's classifications and based the idea on the Academy Awards.

I suppose since any scenario released is 'automatically' entered into the contest, including whatever people are working on right now or have already released in the past few months, there may be quite a few more entries than in the past. Off the top of my head, these released scenarios or works in progress would make great entries:

The Fall of Rome
American War of Independence
Siege of Cydonia
Sea Kings
Bitterfrost 3
Warlords of China
Federick the Great
The Age of Napolean
WWII - Europa
Pax California
Lord of the One Ring
First Strike 2

Perhaps we can merge Ancient and Middle Ages, Discovery and Industrial, WWII and Atomic to come up with just 4 categories.

On the idea of experience categories, the problem is the designation part. It is again subject to concensus and debate. You know that's where the India project ground to a standstill. Even so, if everyone likes that idea, I'm not opposed to it.

I think a new SDC would be great! Both categories have their merits, though I would prefer grouping entries by era. Merging them down to 4 categories sounds like a good idea. Perhaps if we wanted we could have special awards by miscellaneous category. "Best beginner entry", etc.

The number of individuals who are actively designing scens has grown significantly in the past year but I don't think that it is adequate to warrant numerous categories of entries. To try to recognize both the beginner and the expert, as well as promote further experimentation with what is possible in both MGE and TOT, the following 3 categories might suffice.

1. Best first (or second?) scenario.
2. Technically most innovative scen.
3. Best scen.

I'm ok to tag on an additional 'most innovative' award (maybe limited to the winners of the main categories, i.e. the best of the best) but the newcomer award doesn't seem to fit with the profile of the S-League. We're almost all veterans and even werd has churned out - was it his third scenario already. We can set up seperate threads per category for people to vote and discuss why they voted for which scenario.

At last count we seem to have enough potential entries as it is

Seriously though, I think this idea is a good one as it gives a focal point for everyone's hard work and is a bit of fun too. We all have different motivations for building scenarios but a bit of recognition for a job well done can make your day!

Can't wait for the heated discussions as to the pros and cons of certain scenarios

I like the idea of the scenario design contest.

I´m currently working on two scenarios (European Napolenic and Age of Discovery, both for TOT), so I hope I can support the contest with these two scenarios when they are ready.
