  • Brief Review; Aeternas Civitas

    The Eternal City

Very nice scenario. Been playing it as the Romans, primarily. The unit strengths are good. I'd like to know how these numbers were determined and what was the idea behind them. Terrain was great, though one could wish for a better orchards/groves tile. Graphix are superb, as always with fairline units. The cities are good too, and work especially well for the gauls and germans. Techs come along at a good pace, despite the high number, and the tech tree itself is very interesting. There are some major delaying tactics hidden in it. It's nice how Roma is the only real production center. The other cities in Italy are easy enough to conquer, and fast, but occupying them is a trick, and money will buy you troops . . . but you might need the gold later.

Fun to play. It preserves a "tactical" element as well as a strategic. Chosing your terrain for a fight is VERY important. The map is immense. Largest Mediterranean map I've seen, IIRC. But it works, and the barbs/AIs don't seem to wander off into the boondocks too much. Movement is good for the map size--you can get things done. The improvements come along very slowly. You'll appreciate everything you get. Wonders even farther along. No idea what the hex editing was like, but it seems extensive, and to good cause. The whole diplomacy module is truncated, leaving off most of it, and cutting you off automatically. It works, if you're trying to tame an mge AI. They seem to remain remarkably peaceful if you just follow the rules, and only after multiple sneak attacks by moi did an AI player do the same.

There are a huge number of village units on the map and killing them gives a 150 cash reward. This seems okay, but . . . if you put together a boat/hastati (amphib.) team, it can jet around the shorelines and pick off the villages. Put three of these teams in action from turn 1 and the amount of gold you can amass is considerable.

This is a workable idea because of a problem. The pirate ships do not attack. I have never seen one do so. They do get in the way occasionally, but seem only put there to 1.) give the opening Roman fleet something to do, and 2.) take up a huge amount of time while they all move and make me watch. I discovered this in my now-abandoned Fall of Rome scen. The storms at sea don't ever attack. no idea why. I wonder if the sub flag has something to do with this? Maybe the pirates/storms need the sub flag too?

The barbarians were a mystery at first. They'd come boiling out of their origin cities . . . and stop. Late in the game, I'd come across cities far out on the frontiers surounded by barbs. Then it occurred to me why, and Keenen's barbarian paper explains it; fortresses/stackable terrain. At least they don't wander off into the blue. The problem with this is that it enables a very efficient, if not very enjoyable tactical method. The method is this; move a general through the mess of units next to the city. attack the single barb unit holding the city and destroy it. move in. Now all the other barbs will suicide attack your general, now full strength, behind a greatwall/city wall. Using this tactic, one can occupy Italy in 20 years, taking almost a city per turn. Out on the frontier the problem really becomes getting troops up to the point where your generals have conquered.

Nice scenario, I recommend it for ancient scen players.

    • Thanks for the possitive review Exile

I take it you were playing Aeterna Civitas II? This is a much improved version of the original Aeterna Civitas.

As stated in the Scenario League this game is designed primarily as a multiplayer game so it is pleasing to find out that it plays OK as a single player game too. I have considered making a Test of Time version tailored for single player and after this encouraging assesment that may well be attempted at a later date.

Have a read through the info on the Wiki page for an explaination of the unit stats system:

      Aeterna Civitas II info

If I do get round to making a ToT version I will fix the problem of passive barbarians and use the units space and unit rules to make the AI nations a bigger threat.

      Good stuff

      • Thanks for the review, Exile. I've played a few turns as Carthage, and it seems very well made. Tough, too. Waiting for the Barb ships to move is annoying, but otherwise it seems to have a very good feel to it.

Have you manged to get a multi-player game going, McM?

I hope you do a Test of Time version. I'd be happy to help with events, if you do.

        • We have been playing a multiplayer game at Civ Webring for some time and it is a lot of fun. I think the stats need a bit of a tweak to make things more offensively oriented for the multiplayer version. Of course in a hotseat game you do not see the AI's movement. In a ToT version I would cut back on the number of barbarians and give more cities to the seven nations. If I get round to a Test of Time version I would certainly take you up on your offer of help with the events!

I have spent the past three evenings engrossed in a very enjoyable game of Warlords of China. I am up to May 1928 as the Nationalists and I am doing quite well. Decided to play at King level after reading horror stories about its difficulty. I think I will play at Deity next time. The AI has been a hard nut to crack at times but at King level I have not as threatened as I did in Frederick the Great or Red October, I expect Deity will be a whole new ballgame! Its been a while since I really immersed myself in a game of conquest and this has to be one of the best scenarios of its kind!

          • Some questions . . .

Is the scenario WWII Europa complete?

Is the scenario Rise of the Dictators complete?

I'd sure like to see what's happening on that webring. Can I change it to english? if so, how? Went to the bottom of the page and hit the "english" button, but only some of the headings and menus changed. Didn't translate the forum content.

Yes, tried to play version 1 of AC, but gave up after a few tries. ACII is far and away a better effort. Are you still planning to put together a play-as-Rome-only events file?

            • @Exile

WWII Europa is complete but has a few bugs and a VERY basic and buggy tech tree. It was my first attempt at scenario creation!

If you have a copy of Test of Time then the much updated and improved Fortress Europe that is ready for playtesting! I know you are an MGEphile but ToT is essential for playing such ultimate classics as Warlords of China, Red October, Frederick the Great, Lost Legions, Operation Market Garden and the Dictator series!

Rise of the Dictators is almost ready. Just need to add events and do some testing/tweaking. This is also designed specifically as a multiplayer game at Civ Webring. Should be ready by early September when Eurisko returns.

              Re: Civ Webring
I use the following free site to translate posts from German into English: Free translator
Most of the posts are quite short and I can understand a few of them without translation, you soon pick up words that are repeated regularly. Most of the guys there are willing to post in English anyway. They are a top bunch of chaps and are very friendly. We are always looking for new players to boost our small numbers. Generally the games are played at a quick pace and some of the players are top notch so it is a real challenge.

I would consider putting together a set of single player events for Aeterna Civitas II, both for MGE and Test of Time, though I am quite busy with other projects just now. If I know some people will play it then it will be worth the effort!

              • Saw that you placed roman and barb units in saguntum, and a few other places, etc.

Can this be done outside a city?

What happens if the city is one pop, no wall, has three units in it, two of one civ (which owns the city), one of another, and an attack defeats the first defending unit, thereby destroying the city? and leaving two units from different civs occupying the same square?

                Is this possible?

                • No idea. Try it out. You may find out a new trick!

The idea of placing 'hidden' units inside cities was to create friction between players. If the Romans destroyed the barbarians they would be faced with the choice of diplomacy with the nation with troops stationed there or war with the occupying nation. The nation with the hidden troops could either withdraw them or occupy the city. That was the idea anyway.

                    • OK, I have been convinced. I will start working on this but it will have to take a back seat to Rise of the Dictators (due out in September/multiplayer) and the US map for Civ2units.

Feel free to make suggestions on what I can add, especially for the 18 extra units!

                      • Ok then . . .

Is it possible to hexedit things so that only the barbarians have guerilla warfare?

                        • Can the barbs have techs? This is an aspect of the game I am ignorant about right now. Sounds like a good idea if someone can tell me how it works!

                          • The barbs lose all advanced technologies. They research only a few at the very bottom, eg. pottery.
