You're undoubtedly correct, Eyes. Even though I've never played 4, I can agree with you because every other game will surely suck compared to Civ2.

That's why I said I thought we ought to focus on players from the Civ2 world, except for Blake. At least, can we agree that if indeed Blake made 4 more enjoyable to play, then Civ4 will keep the 'franchise' alive?? Maybe someday there will be a revival of interest in Civ2. That pipedream could be realized if the source code is ever made public allowing some real mods. Remember all the suggestion threads about how to improve Civ2 before we learned that 3 was going to be a 'new beginning' instead of an upgrade??

Sadly I'm probably going to have to agree with Eyes of night. It seems to me that the computer game industry is dying... it killed itself when it foolishly moved to 3D.

Just a casual look at the gaming aisles gives lie to that fact.

MMOs will exist.
RTSes, maybe, though their popularity seems to be dropping.

and that's about it.

RPGs and Fighting and Racing- they're all console games.

and TBSes don't run as well on 3D- at least yet.

Solver

Originally joining Apolyton for Call to Power, Solver is a longtime player and fan of the Civ series. Solver became an Apolyton staff member not long after joining the site- running his famous ¡°Faces of Apolyton¡± interview series. He has also written numerous feature articles for the site. Additionally, he contributed to the List for Civ IV and is a current co-head of the Apolyton Civ IV section of the site. In 2005, he became a playtester for civ IV.

Civ III master strategist. Devoted demogamer. First person to defeat Civ IV at deity level, during testing.

After discussion with the rest of the Apolyton Staff, it has been decided to award HoF induction to the following former Firaxian in recognition of his contribution to Apolyton and the Civ Community:

Soren Johnson
Whether he was providing valuable aid and advice to the Apolyton community, listening to proposals like Apolyton's LIST, or helping Apolytoners become bugtesters or work for Firaxis itself, he contribuited to the Apolyton community. He also helped out at Apolycon 2006- Apolyton's convention near Firaxis' headquarters. In other news, he co-designed Civ III and was the lead designer for Civ IV. He worked at Firaxis from April 2000-March 2007. For these accomplishments and more, he is being made an honorary inductee of the Apolytoners' Hall of Fame. congratulations Soren!

3D isn't the problem. The problem is that they are too focused on 3D and have allowed gameplay to come after graphics. Not only that, but I question the talent Firaxis has these days. They clearly didn't think a lot of the game play "additions" out and many of them look like they were still in the idea process. They weren't taken far enough and they definitely were not implemented properly. These guys just don't seem to have the ideas and knowledge necessary to make a good game at this stage of Civ's life.

I agree. In principle it should be possible (but difficult and complicated) to modify Civ 4 to match the gameplay of Civ2 with modern 3D graphics. IMO the real issue (with Civ4) is that the designers have introduced large numbers of "features" that end up simply making the game more complicated rather than enhancing the game play.

Make the game more complicated? That's the problem from the start with Civ4. The game is too simple. A 5 year old could learn this game without much effort. The game is incomplete and rushed and proper testing wasn't done. Combine that with a lack of talent and we see why Civ4 turned out the way it did.
