  • Lost Classic: After Alexander

I wonder if anyone has it on their hard drive other than me: a scenario started by Harlan Thompson called "After Alexander." It starts at 265 BC and allows play as any of the 3 successors to Alexander's empire, as well as the Romans and Carthaginians. The map is one of my favorites, stretching from Britannia to the western slopes of the Hindu Kush.

Anyway, he got well along in its development before giving up (I think it had something to do with barbarian-like pirates). I dusted it off and have replaced the unit graphics with some of fairline & bebro's work. Would anyone be interested in having a look?

Officially the final product is subject to fairline telling me if certain graphics might be better used in different slots.

Michael, I'll post my version of the units soon. Better yet, why don't I convert to ToT and use 15-bit?

Is it just me BTW, or is this the most productive period in civ2 scenario design since the late 90's / early naughties? Our cups runneth over with new and in-development scenarios.

That would work. My one and only foray into using ToT for a scenario has left a bad taste in my mouth after all these years.

Um, Gareth, can we MGE people get a crack at it first, before you turn it into a tot thing?

The map alone sounds like it's worth looking at.

No worries - Michael has already used my units in the MGE version and I'll tinker with them to make 'em fit better etc. The reason I want to convert it to ToT is a selfish one: I can really only play ToT these days as civ2 maxes out processor usage sending my PC into meltdown in no time at all, and there's only a patch to fix this for ToT AFAIK.

I think we can cater to both MGE and ToT people on this one.

I think there may be a file missing from the zip.

The Readme states that there should be a file called "RomeRules.txt" which is used when a player wants to play as Rome. Some units like the legion have helo qualities.

                      And there are no sounds.

It was an unfinished work, keep in mind.

Wouldn't be too hard to fix up everything but the missing ReadMe.

I replaced that with two versions of the events.file instead,

Wouldn't the Rules.txt affect the stats and type of unit that appears in the game, while the event.txt would affect what happens and when units appear in the game?

It seems that they may be two different things.

Yes, Harlan's change to rules.txt made Roman Legions into helicopter-like air units so they would leave the Italian peninsula. I added some city conquest triggers and moveunit commands to the events file instead. It looked to me like the Romans expanded pretty well after that.
