  • Airlifts

    Hi.

Anyone know of any work done on the likelihood of an airlift being shot down?

    Thanks.

Something I've always wondered too, especially whether it takes into account the number of fighters in intercept range.
STDs are like pokemon... you gotta catch them ALL!!!

This was discussed briefly in a GOTM spoiler at CFC (#60, page 2). A strong player ("golem") wrote:

"If you are at war fighters are the problem - if AI has some fighters around, they usually shotdown your transport. I suppose it depends on their number too - in some games I have about 50 percent success with delivering, but sometimes I have no chance - too much fighters was around."

From the context, I think "transport" means "airlift".

Another player wrote that the odds have never been analyzed. I thought somebody else said the odds don't depend on the number of enemy planes (but I can't find the quote... so maybe I dreamed it).

I dunno. I don't airlift often, but feel over 50% of mine get shot down when I ignore the warning, even if the AI has very few planes nearby.

My most recent game was on a gigamap, and the game seemed very sensitive to the specific location of the destination city (source city was generally on a different continent, far away from enemy fighters). I could airlift units to cities on a different part of the continent without even getting the interception warning. Sometimes these cities wouldn't even be that far away from the first attempted destination.

There may be a "range" factor from the city that the fighters are based in (Q- what if there are multiple cities with fighters), then there is probably a "chance of intercept" around 50%. There might be something in the archives here from the late 90's.
