  • Apolytoners' Hall of Fame: October 2006

3rd Post down from here contains VOTING RESULTS!

Hello and welcome to another edition of the Apolytoners Hall of Fame!

    What is it?
The Apolytoners Hall of Fame (HoF) is a list of people who contributed a lot to the community here on Apolyton. For example: Xin Yu was inducted in the HoF for his incredible strategy and MP contributions to the Civ2 section, yin26 for his fantastic work on 'The List' with suggestions for Civ3. Every member of the Hall of Fame has made great contributions to Apolyton and the Civilization community - these people and their accomplishments must be remembered by us all!

If you don't recognize many names you probably haven't been here very long and/or hardly ever post outside this forum/section - in that case this HoF might be a good opportunity to learn something about them. That is why this Hall of Fame was created: to remember and learn.

Periodically, we hold a vote for the Apolytoners who we think contribute the most to Apolyton, the ones who make Apolyton what it is. The winners shall be inducted in the Hall of Fame and their names will live forever in the annals of Apolyton!

    History
The idea for the Hall of Fame was born in late 2000 as an outgrowth of the old Apolyton Army and Apolytoner of the Season Contests, seeking to honor the people of Apolyton in a more meaningful and structured way.

The first edition was held in the Off Topic in December 2000 over a period of 3 days and is currently archived. The first election saw Markos and Dan, the owners and administrators of this site, and the first 10 posters inducted.

Since then, the HoF vote has been held roughly 4 times a year with 11-14 total members being elected every year. Up until August 2002, the vote was held only in the Off Topic forum - from that time on it has been posted in other sections (first in Civ3, later also in SMAC, CtP1-MP, CtP2, etc).

    This edition
Welcome to the October 2006 edition of the APOLYTONERS HALL OF FAME

(2 Members to be inducted this session)
(Only 10 total will be elected this year)
You have approximately 14 days to vote [Until October 15th).

    II.) RULES

    1) Rules for voting

Everyone can vote for 3 posters

    Registered In/Before 1999- 5 points per vote
Registered In 2000- 4 points per vote
Registered In 2001- 3 point per vote
Registered In 2002- 3 points per vote
Registered In 2003- 2 points per vote
Registered In 2004- 2 points per vote
Registered In 2005- 2 points per vote
Registered In 2006- 1 point per vote

-You may not vote for yourself.
-All 'frivolous' votes are thrown out.
-Giving your vote to someone merely because they ask is considered a frivolous vote.

No vote changing once you have voted for someone; unless you accidentally voted for someone already in the hall.

You may only vote once in the hall of fame (for 3 people) IF you try to vote more than once ALL of your votes will be made void.

Time Limit for voting is: 14 Days for this time.

    2) Amendments

    a) Purgings

Members will be purged from the voting rolls if they received 0 new votes in the month of election. This allows the hall to keep up-to-date, and keeps it from having to reset completely every month. Thus, the hall worthy posters will continue to gather votes day in and day out because their contributions to Apolyton are timeless.

    b) Posthumous Inductions

In the regrettable case where a popular member has perished, the Hall of Fame has the ability to posthumously induct him/her into the hall based upon popular opinion. The first class of posthumous inductees (December 2003) included such forum greats as Tazidude, and Scouse Gits(2).

    3) FAQ:

Trust me, an on-topicer will never win

What about Xin Yu? What about Velociryx? Both good posters who are currently in the hall!
And if you think that being interviewed by Solver is a prerequisite for an on-topicer getting into the hall- then I had best remind you of the election of Paul!

And remember, many of these so-called mainly-OT posters used to be huge on-topic contribuitors back around 1998-99! Ming for example, Giant Squid for another!

    Disclaimer:

The Hall of Fame is based on whoever people vote for, and as Lazarus and the Gimp stated so eloquently: "The compilers of this list cannot rule out the possibility of inductees being a bunch of utter ****s" Thus: please don’t shoot the messenger.

Where is the Hall of Fame usually posted?

From December 2000 to August 2002, the Hall of Fame had only been posted in the Off Topic forums; with occasional forays into the Apolyton/Community section. However, nowadays you can find the Apolytoners hall of fame in the OT (main) Civ III (main), Civ IV (main) and with satellite threads that link into the hall of fame in the following sections: CTP II MP, Civ II-General, AC-General, Alt.Civ section, Clash of Civilizations, CIV IV MP, and Civ III DemoGame sections.

    ”How long is voting?”

Voting will continue for 14-16 days.

In December; the time allotted for voting will be at least 22 days unless the corollary act is enacted and voting is done during Christmas time; in that case voting will be extended to 30 days in order to accommodate all traveling voters)

Why Do People who received no votes last time expire ?

Their votes expire and they are zeroed and kicked off the list because they were not found to be interesting at the time of the last vote or two. This is done so as to keep the hall clear…

This new process certainly keeps the hall current (a la Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame)

Despite the recommendation not to carry over votes at all, that tradition will be continued, because we don’t merely want “flavor of the month” posters elected. The persons who should be elected to the hall should have contributed to the site over a long period of time.

Hitler got Time's Man of the Year, so EoN can get into the Apolyton Hall of Fame. It isn't about who you like the most, but who had the most impact. Well no one here can deny that Eyes has had a big impact on the game of Civ2.

So true... EON (like him or not) had a real impact on how many people played Civ II. Besides being a great player (well, on the settings he liked, otherwise, people that played other settings were all morons ) he brought many new strategies to the table, and was also a very entertaining poster. The classic, "I'm the best threads" were always worth a read

I'd argue that Eyes didn't really have any impact outside of his highly specialized subgenre. How much did he change the way the single-player, 1x1x game was played? I know, those settings were beneath his notice, but people like Paul, Samson, Solo, and oedo (and SlowThinker, too) really did come up with some original insight into the game mechanics - and I'm not talking about black-clicking.

EoN was a great self-promoter and a smart guy, but I think his success was based on gamesmanship as much as anything else. Maybe the OT elects people on the basis of being an "entertaining poster", but I'd hope for something more out of the Civ2 old-timers.

The fun part of the HOF is that everybody can have a different opinion on what makes for a good candidate. I helped lead the drive for people like Paul, Odeo, Xin Yu, and other classic Civ II'ers. And if you will note, my votes this time are all for Civ II'ers.

But I have to disagree with you on your view of the value of entertainment to this site. (and by the way, your attempted insult at OTFers was uncalled for... remember, many of us are OTFers as well as Civ IIers)

Gaming is for entertainment... and this site is meant to be fun. For the owners, this is a hobby. The reason why many of us play games is for fun and entertainment, and frankly, if this place was boring, there wouldn't be much of a community. Apolyton is meant to be fun and entertaining, so I enjoy and respect the entertainment value that some posters bring to this site... and that is "a" consideration when I vote for certain posters.

Feel free to look down your nose at EON if you so wish.
(I'm sure he would at you too, as well as most people here ) But he understood the game better than most people, and played it with high levels of skill... coming up with as many new strategies as others here.

People didn't like him... Many claimed he cheated... many thought he was a complete ass... but he is an important part of Civ II MP history... one of the highest ranked players (as he would tell us many times) and probably deserves a place in the HOF more than some of the people that have already been admited.

Ozzy should hopefully make it this time, and if Slow Thinker doesn't, he will next time. It's good to see the Civ II community so well represented... and it's good to know, that we aren't done yet getting our candidates in.

                            Keep on Civin'
                            Keep on Civin'
RIP rah, Tony Bogey & Baron O

His subgenre was multi-player. Also the subgenre of many of the rest of us here. So yea, some of his strategies wouldn't affect the basic single player game (not that I want to get into a chest thumping match, but I don't know any Civ2-MPers who hadn't beat Deity level on SP so many times it was boring, so who knows how necessary new strategies were for it...), but as Ming said, having all the different opinions on what makes a good member of our community is the fun.

But anyways, part of the idea of this "pact" was to help out candidates in the other genres (SP or MP) so both groups would benefit. So while Eyes wouldn't be your first choice, and while I honestly don't have a clue what Bloody Monk or Slowthinker did for Civ, I guess each side should pick its candidates and the other should go along. (not to say EoN is our top guy, he isn't yet, but someday maybe).
