I just started, and i would appreciate some help.
How do you load explorers or settlers onto the boats so they can explore the rest of the world.
    thanks

been a while since I have done this

should be a number of ways to do this

line up unit at the coast -use the numpads
right click on unit see if there is a load option
use mouse to point to boat
anti steam and proud of it

CDO ....its OCD in alpha order like it should be

All the above is right - you can walk a unit onto the boat if it has enough movement points left that turn.

Also, if the unit and ship are in a city you can hit 'S' to tell the unit to sleep / board the next ship (you can also do this from the city screen if you click on the unit image in the middle of the screen). Then when you get the chance to move the ship the unit should be on baord.

Just watch the limit of number of units for each type of ship (2 for Trireme, 3 for Caravel).

No question too dumb on this forum...

              Welcome funko239!

Explorers are great for exploring other continents. Is there a case for early research of Seafaring to use them for exploring one's own continent? Quick exploration should be an important goal, but somehow I don't find Seafaring as attractive as other early advances such as Monarchy or Trade. Also while combat units are much slower, they have a better chance against barbarians.

I like the Explorer for popping huts, just because he can get away with 2 moves if a barb emerges.

(if a horde emerges, the popping unit is dead anyway)

Seafaring is something I prize on giga-continent gigamaps. Exploring with Horsemen over rough terrain is painfully slow.

I can see that. I'll have to try an early Seafaring beeline when I get back to Civ2. While I always tried to explore as quickly as possible, I don't think I ever made research choices accordingly. (However, my science advisor will think I'm crazy when I tell him that I want Seafaring as soon as possible because we are on a huge landmass.)

Pft, you think the science advisor pays attention to that?

Now that you mention it, the chap seems happy regardless of what I tell him to research as long as he gets enough funds. He's really more a lobbyist than an advisor. (I only brought him up as a way of saying that, at first sight, it's surprising that Seafaring is particularly useful on large continents.)

                      "Pft"?

Yes, there are many more seemingly better tech paths to take early in the game. Nothing can be interupted until monarchy. But if i got pottery from a hut as my off tech, sometimes if the map looks right I'll go for seafaring early afterwards.

I tried an early Seafaring focus over the weekend in a game where I had Pottery as a starting advance. It's an interesting change of pace to have the continent mapped so quickly and expand with such an excellent knowledge of the map. However, the effects of the delay in getting the social advances as early as one is used to are equally dramatic. Not following that path for once was fun, but also a good reminder of how important Monarchy really is (or at least how dependent from it my game has become).
