Where exactly are the gfxs in this file used?

Certainly not in the civilopaedia(the describe section).

I've been scouring Catefish's excellent ToT site but no answer there as well.

Moreover how does one change those civilopaedia gfxs?
Hope they are not coded in the dlls files.

I hope I haven't misunderstood your question but the icons in IMPROVEMENTS.BMP are used in the civilopedia displays of City Improvements and Wonders of the World.

Sorry, but changing them is beyond my meagre skills. I can only admire them for the artistry of the developer.

Palaiologos is correct. They're not used in the Civilopedia, although it would make more sense if they were; things size down better than they size up. The icons from improvements.bmp are used in the city screen (the ToT one, not the classic one) and in various message boxes from game.txt, eg, @HOCKTHIS, @BATTERY, and @NOTRANSPORTER.

Hmm, I might add a couple more items to the FAQ section. Be sure to check William Keenan's articles over at the Cradle of Civilization. The Midgard scenario is also an excellent tutorial for scenario designers new to ToT. It was always my main reference.

No, they're found in files 01imp.bmp - 67imp.bmp. The Original, Fantasy and SciFi games all have their own sets. Simply copy one of these sets to your scenario directory and paste your own graphics into them. If no XXimp.bmp graphics are present in your scenario directory, the game will use the ones from the Original directory as the default - if your scenario began life as an Original game or was converted to ToT using CivConverter. Note that the pixel in the top left corner of the wonder files is used to define a transparent colour for the image - see here.
