  • Capitalization

How is capitalization supposed to work? When I indicate I want to obtain that advance, I might be told it will take 10 times to achieve my goal. If I try to buy it, nothing appears when I click "buy" so I am denied that mode of access. When I check to see how close I am to getting it using the city advisory, it will tell me for all the cities I am trying to achieve that advance, I am at 0 of the 600 I need. This tabulation never changes whether I have gone 5 turns or 50. As soon as I indicate that I want capitalization however, the line turns from blue to gold in the city advancement change window. Is this the way the software should work?
If it isn't how do I fix it?

Your game is working correctly ...

(Capitalization) is not a true WoW, but a means of turning shields into gold (at a lousy exchange rate of 1:1)
In theory you put a city to capitalization when there is nothing left to build there and still get some gain - but the players here will tell you, you can never have too many Freights!!!!!

Notice how Capitalization appears differently in the list?? It has parenthesis around its name, unlike the other choices. As noted, it is more of a default or placeholder and the number of turns, for example, is meaningless. Very confusing!!

        Thank you.

I appreciate your explanation. I understand what you are saying and never use it until a city no longer produces any more exports except food and I have built everything I can use. After I have no more need for food, I turn to capitalization.
I am glad to know that my software is working properly!

Sorry kkelley if I am telling grandma how to suck eggs - but you are aware that Freights can be used to build WoWs and SS parts?

And in similar vein, are you aware of the techniques available to re-open the abilty of a city to produce a non-food van?

I have no ego or misconceptions of my skills with this game and deeply appreciate the time you are taking to help me. I don't know if your Grandma comment was intentionally personal or generic, but since I am a 72 year old grandmother, I probably could easily be old enough to be your grandmother. Whatever you tell me I accept gratefully as coming from the generosity of your heart.
I am afraid that I don't even know what WoWs is an abreviation for. I also do not know how to make a city produce non-food products when I am no longer given alternative choices since I have exported so many freights of dye, wool etc. Any tips you wish to give me I will appreciate.

My what a precocious youngster you must have been, grandma! I just announced my retirement on another thread

WoW is Wonder of the World - and any caravan or freight can be cashed in at the building city for 50 shields equivalent to 200 gold - this is indeed the preferred technique for building Wonders as once you have stockpiled sufficient vans the Wonder can be built in a single turn.

For Spaceship parts the process is a little bit more complex - you set the city building a redundant Wonder often the expired Oracle or Manhatten which is generally despised on these boards - cash in some vans to build up the shields and then switch production to the SS part required - which occurs without penalty.

The arcane art of supply & demand manipulation I leave to others to explain, but a simple trick is the 'Food Caravan Trick' - if a food caravan is cashed in for shields - see above - often (but I fear not every time) a Supply becomes available.

Oh - and both Monk & RJM are approximately my age as well

Oh - if this is not obvious from the above - "teaching grandma to suck eggs" is a common British expression meaning - trying to explain something to someone who is already an expert in the field -- obviously it does not stand translation into American! My abject apologies for any possible personal reference there.

It looks like Civilization is a great activity for the retired. I first began playing Civilization 1 when it came out back in 1993 or so.
Working took up so much of my time that I could never get enough of my game. Once I retired Civilization became my form of golf. The strategy that I use might not be fun for others. I build the Great Wall first and later the UN. No matter what the provocation, I won't go to war. As a result, I am able to build Wonders in abundance and Future technology by the dozens since I don't have to bother with military, weapons etc. Perhaps I will never get the great scores of war lords, but I enjoy the game without having my cities constantly being attacked or planning violence against my neighbors.
This isn't a value judgement against others who play using a different, perhaps better strategy. It is just the way I enjoy the game. I realize the authors expect us to be warriors, but it is just a game to be played in whatever fashion gives us the most pleasure.
Thank you for your efforts in my behalf. I have enjoyed reading your messages to me.

                      Now I am confused

I have just noticed that you are on GMT, but are flying the Stars & Stripes. .....

As to your strategy - this is the ultimate beauty of this game - it allows us all to be ourselves and play the way we want to - personally I'm a RAR (Rabid Aggressive Rodent) and choose to conquer the world using, by preference, Crusaders and Ironclads = 'Crooks & Clads' - so I guess we have little in common in terms of game play - but so what - these boards are for all those who enjoy this great game!

The idea of anyone being old enough to be Stu's grandmother is quite fun. As to me, in the UK at least, you are not old enough to be my mother, let alone my grandmother.

PS Perhaps Grandma Kelley can confirm this, but I believe teaching your grandmother to suck eggs is an American expression.

I like to think Sid and Company wanted more than another War Game. That's why they called it Civilization. What makes this game almost unique is how open ended it is, allowing for so many different game styles. It's all about having fun.

There exists here a wonderful community who are only too happy to "talk shop", so feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

As to that saying, maybe 'preaching to the choir' would be less confusing.

I usally find that Shakes and subs defeats crooks and clads. I usually have subs when most others have clads... Again as Monk etal have stated, the brilliance of the game is that individual and unique strategies can be developed, all of which are equally able to win. I would suggest a multi player game as well as playing the computer....

Welcome! Hehe, I'm only in my forties and and some young whippersnapper call me "old" in another thread.

I recall I was horribly confused by Capitalization as well. I couldn't figure out what it was doing, but realized I was better off building units anyway. Just build the biggest unit that the city can make in one turn (often a Spy) and send it to disband to start production of a city improvement so it can be rushed cheaply in one turn.

So, did you just now get around to exploring Civ2 websites?
